US Video Streaming giant Netflix today took the wraps off it’s long-rumoured service for the UK and Ireland, offering instant and unlimited access to a wide range of entertainment titles for £5.99/6.99 EUR per month. The launch, backed by a 1 month free trial puts the company in head to head competition with Amazon’s LoveFilm service, which itself announced 2m subscribers this morning.

Using OS X Lion Server as a Home Server (Part 13 – iChat Server)
Our run through of OS X Lion Server continues with one of the platform’s smaller features, but one that may well be useful to some in the home. iChat is Apple’s instant messaging service, and will be a familiar sight to Mac users. It offers text, voice and video messaging across the Internet in its standard guide (that is, when used on a Mac client without a server) but with Lion Server installed on your network, iChat can also be used locally around the home.

Hands On: Q-Waves Quicklink HD
Whilst Intel’s Wireless Display technology may be front of mind for many when considering pushing video from a PC to a TV or projector, it requires compatible laptops (Intel-based, obviously) and TV adaptors. That may be fine for those ready to invest in new kit, but what about connecting your existing, or older PCs?

Hands On: Popcorn Hour A-210 Media Receiver
Popcorn Hour receives an incremental update with a new aluminium chassis, and silent, fanless operation. But in an increasingly competitive marketplace, is the new A-210 enough to fight the new kids on the block?

Add-in: WHS Phone v1.0.7
WHS Phone, an add-in which allows you to manage Windows Home Server via a Windows Phone 7 handset is now available in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. As previously reported, the add-in enables file browsing, music streaming and photo viewing and allow access to certain management functions on the home server.

Hands-On: Cisco WVC2300 Wireless-G Business Internet Video Camera
Cisco’s WVC2300 Network Camera may look the business, but has it got what it takes to protect your premises? There’s only one way to find out…

Add-in: WHS Phone Controls Windows Home Server via Windows Phone 7
We’ve just heard about a forthcoming add-in for Windows Home Server, which looks set to delight Windows Phone 7 owners.
WHS Phone will allow a Windows Phone 7 device to connect to Windows Home Server and browse files, stream music, view photos and allow access to certain management functions on the home server.
IFA 2010: Toshiba STOR.E TV+
Toshiba announced the latest generation of their digital media receiver range at IFA. The STOR.E TV+ plays music, photos and high definition video at 1080p from a network location, locally attached USB 2.0 storage, an on board 3 in 1 card reader (supporting SD, MMC and MS) or from it’s internal 3.5” SATA drive bay.

IFA 2010: Samsung Galaxy Tab Hands On
In Berlin last week there was a lot of buzz around Samsung’s new tablet, the Galaxy Tab, and there were a host of display models on the stand available to check out. I managed to get hands on with the device for a few minutes to check out a few features, including You Tube, Web Browsing, Maps, Email and the device’s built in music application.
