It’s the latest iteration of that box we look at today, which is said to have finally nailed the criticisms that plagued its predecessors which were bulky, noisy, unreliable and difficult to cool.

Aside from limited editions and colour variants, this is the first major overhaul of the Xbox 360’s chassis since the console was launched back in 2005, however, it’s certainly not the first revision of the Xbox 360’s internals which have been continually tweaked and cost engineered. Indeed, the new Xbox 360 (codename Valhalla) is the sixth iteration of the console hardware, which has seen the original 90nm CPU and separate GPU combined into a single 45nm chip, with the console’s power supply reducing from 203W down to a more reasonable 135W. Previous iterations of the Xbox 360 were powerful gaming machines, but required a lot of cooling – that meant any game you cared to play or music enjoyed would be accompanied by the sound of a nearby hovercraft, with cooling fans maxed out just to keep the console running. The latest advances in CPU and GPU fabrication have enabled the production of a smaller, lighter, silent Xbox 360, which can now take pride of place in the living room without the need for ear defenders.

So, what else is new?

The new chassis is a complete reinterpretation of the previous design. The iconic “ring of light” is retained, but all new 360’s will be clad in a piano black finish edged in silver, which replaces the off-white and matt black designs which are now obsolete. The Xbox 360’s internal hard drive has been upgraded to 250GB (a cheaper 4GB model has also been announced for those who do not require on-board storage), and wi-fi (802.11n) is now integrated into the console. Compatibility with Microsoft’s forthcoming Kinect motion controller is also assured, courtesy of a new connector to the rear of the console. But perhaps the main reason for many upgraders to purchase the new model will be something that Microsoft have taken away from the Xbox 360 – that fan noise. The new model is whisper quiet, and will deliver a far more pleasurable gaming and media experience as a result. Let’s jump in and take a look at the console in more detail.

What’s in the Box?

Open up the branded box (with none-too subtle prompts to buy Kinect), and you’ll find the console is packed with an accompanying Component AV cable, headset, wireless controller and external power supply, which too has been reduced in size compared with the previous model, but is still reasonably bulky. Note that Microsoft change the PSU connector with each hardware revision to ensure you don’t blow your console up, so you will not be able to use your old power supply with the new model.

The inclusion of the headset is a nice touch for those who enjoy berating competitors on Xbox Live during online play, however, a HDMI cable would have seemed a far better choice for those buying the console as a media player. Jamcast also allows users to browse and play back their favorite podcasts via integrated support for both RSS and OPML.

Jamcast is easy to install and configure and runs on Windows XP or higher. A fully-functional 14-day trial of the software is available for download at http://getjamcast.com, and a license can be purchased for only $29.99.

Other key features of Jamcast include:
• Playback and metadata support for MP3, FLAC, OGG, ALAC, AAC, WMA, WMA Lossless, WMA Pro, WMA Voice, WAV, AIFF, SHN, and PCM
• Playlist support for iTunes libraries, Windows Media (WPL), PLS, and M3U
• Windows Media DRM support allows users to stream tracks downloaded from Napster and Zune Marketplace (requires a DRM-compatible device).
• On-demand media transcoding automatically converts media to a compatible format when necessary.
• Works great with iTunes including playlist synchronization and transcoding support for non-DRM Apple content.
• Intuitive server management via a Windows-based management UI makes it simple to configure Jamcast – no editing of configuration or INI files is ever necessary.
• A plugin framework and SDK allows developers to extend the capabilities of Jamcast by adding additional drop-in content providers.

Jamcast works great with the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, as well as other DLNA and UPnP-compliant devices from manufacturers such as Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, LG, Philips, Roku, Yamaha, Denon, and more. TOSlink, S/PDIF). It’s on the back of the 360 S now instead of on the AV cables.

Added: A port for the Kinect sensor that is a hybrid data and power port. Kinect works with all Xbox 360 consoles, but on the new Xbox 360, you don’t need a separate power adapter for the Kinect sensor because this port will provide the power.

Added: 2 more USB ports on the back, bringing the total to three on the rear of the console in addition to the 2 on the front of the new Xbox360.

Does the new Xbox 360 use removable faceplates?

The new Xbox 360 does not have removable faceplates.

Where is the wireless controller bind button, I don’t see it in any of the pictures?

It’s in the front. It was combined with the IR receiver on the front, so that’s why you don’t notice it!

Does it stand vertically and horizontal and do I need an adapter or a stand?

The Xbox 360 console is designed to stand vertically or horizontally. Unlike other consoles, it does not require a stand to sit upright and with the new sleek design it looks and fits great in your living room entertainment center. However, no matter how you position the console, you should not move the console during game or media play, or at any other time when the disc is spinning.

What band does the internal wireless N use?

It’s 2.4GHz.

Do the external wireless adapters work with new Xbox 360 ?

Yes. And if you connect one to the new Xbox 360 will sense this and disable the internal wireless.

Is the power supply the same?

No. It’s a bit smaller and it’s now 135 watt. The connecter type is different too because it’s not meant for use in original Xbox 360 consoles.

Is the hard drive removable?

Yes, just like on the original 360 console, the hard drive is removable.

How can I move data from my current Xbox 360 to the new Xbox 360?

Its super easy—check out Xbox.com/transfer for more details. One important note is that your current Xbox 360 hard drive will not attach to the new Xbox 360. You will need to use either a transfer cable or USB memory to transfer your content.

More: Xbox 360 Forums

WHS Trigger

Add-ins & Apps

Miscellaneous

WHS v1

add-in

console

task scheduler

trigger

whs

Windows Home Server

WHS Trigger integrates the Task Scheduler into the Windows Home Server Console.

Experience Level: Advanced

WHS Trigger integrates the Task Scheduler into the Windows Home Server Console. Once the operating system has been installed, it’s time to install the Windows Home Server Connector software on each home computer we wish to back up.

The great news about installing the Windows Home Server Connector is that it’s really, really easy – in fact, if you’ve got this far, you’ll find it a breeze!

The Windows Home Server Connector is a small piece of software that connects your home computers to Windows Home Server on the network, and includes the Windows Home Server Console – the dashboard software you use to control and manage your home server.

You can install the software on your computer in two ways. Firstly, you may have a copy of the Windows Home Server Connector on the CD that came with your home server. If so, pop the CD into your home computer’s CD/DVD drive and wait for the Autorun window to appear.

Alternatively, to ensure you’re installing the latest version of the Windows Home Server connector, you can do the following:

On the computer you wish to install the Connector, open up Windows Explorer (Start > Computer) and in the address bar at the top of the screen, type in \\[yourhomeservername]/Software (where [yourhomeservername] is the name you gave your home server at installation) – I’m using a HP MediaSmart Server, which is called hpserver, so mine looks like this:

Double click Home Server Connector Software

Double click the application named setup and the Connector setup will run.

Depending on whether you’re using a self-built home server or a pre-build home server from the likes of HP or Acer, the Connector install can be very slightly different in terms of branding, but the process is the same. I’m going to be using a HP MediaSmart Server for this example. Click through the welcome screen and End User License Agreement and the software will begin to install.

Very soon, the main Windows Home Server Connector screen will appear. If you’re installing a self-built version of Windows Home Server, this is the first screen you’ll see.

Once necessary files are installed, the Connector Wizard will go and look for your home server on the network (make sure it’s switched on and plugged into your router!)

If you have more than one home server attached to your network, you’ll be asked which home server you wish to back up that computer. You can only connect a home computer to one home server. The dialog looks like this, if you’re interested:

Most of you will just have the one home server, so as long as it’s detected on the network, you’ll be asked to enter the Windows Home Server Administrator’s password. (If you’ve forgotten it, you can get a hint).

You’ll be asked if you want your home server to wake the computer to back it up (if the computer is hibernating or sleeping). Note that due to the vagaries of Wake on LAN technology, the computer may not be put back to sleep after Windows Home Server is finished with it.

Make your selection and click Next. As we discussed in Part 1 of this Get Started guide, you can purchase a copy of Windows Home Server design specifically for “system builders” (a system builder can be a company who sell home servers, or an individual just like you) from online dealers such as Newegg in the USA, or Komplett, Misco and the like in Europe.

The software package you receive will contain three discs:

Windows Home Server Installation DVD

Windows Home Server Connector CD

Windows Home Server Restore CD

We’ll be using the Installation DVD first of all to install the Windows Home Server operating system on to the home server hardware, and once that’s completed, we’ll use the Connector CD to then install the Windows Home Server Console (the dashboard software used to manage your home server) on to one of your home computers.

Note: This walkthrough is intended for those installing Windows Home Server on a self-built machine – pre-installed home servers from manufacturers such as HP and Acer will have a different configuration procedure, although some parts will be similar.

Okay, let’s get started!

Step 1: Ensure you have a keyboard, mouse, monitor and Ethernet cable available and plugged into your home server

Windows Home Server is designed to be run as a “headless” unit – i.e. it doesn’t need a keyboard, mouse and monitor. It’s just a server, with electricity and a network connection. That’s okay for day to day use, but to install Windows Home Server on your hardware, you need to see what you’re doing and be able to tell the server what you want to do! So, find yourself a USB or PS/2 keyboard and mouse and plug those in (borrow them from one of your desktop PCs – you’ll only need it for a short while), plug in a monitor and then plug your server into your broadband router, using an Ethernet (RJ-45) cable.

Note: Make sure you don’t have any USB or Firewire external hard drives plugged in at this point, or else WHS will refuse to install. You can plug these in after you’ve installed Windows Home Server.

Power it all on, and we’re ready to go!

Step 2: BIOS Settings

I’m not going to spend a huge amount of time on this one – when you switch on the server, you’ll see it tells you to press one of the Function buttons e.g. F12 for “Setup” – do this, and you’ll enter the BIOS settings. This is where you control things like fan speeds, power management settings, which drives/disks the server should boot from etc. All a bit technical for the average user, but interesting enough to have a play with. If you’ve built your own server, check your motherboard manual for the BIOS settings you’ll need. Ensure that all of your hard drives and DVD drive are listed in the BIOS settings. Choose “Save and Exit” and your server will restart.

Step 3: Insert the “Windows Server Installation DVD” into your DVD drive

Open the DVD drive and pop in the Windows Home Server Installation DVD . You may be asked to “Press any key to boot from the DVD drive” – if so, do so! After a short pause, you’ll see a message that “Windows is loading files” and a grey progress bar filling up across the screen from left to right.

If everything’s going to plan, you’ll get the familiar Windows style progress bar:

Before long, the Welcome Screen will appear, and we can start the installation.

Step 4: The Welcome Screen

First of all, let’s tell Windows Home Server where we are and which keyboard region we’d like to use.

You’ll be shown a list of hard drives detected by Windows Home Server – make sure all of your drives are listed – if you have drives missing, it’s more than likely due to missing drivers. In this case, make sure you have your SATA drivers available on a USB key or CD, and click Load Drivers to get them installed.

At this point, select “New Installation” and click “Next”. Remember, if you’re re-using a hard drive from an old machine, it will be reformatted as part of the installation process, so everything will be wiped. If you need the data on this drive, don’t install Windows Home Server on to it.

Step 5: End User License Agreement

The EULA pops up – I always feel sorry for the lawyers who write EULAs. No-one ever reads them, but they look like they’re lots of work. Do that guy a favour and have a quick read through. Once you’re done, select “I accept the agreement” then “Next”.

Step 6: License Agreement

License agreement time – you’ll find a license key printed somewhere on your Windows Home Server DVD case. Type it into the relevant box on the screen and press “Next”.

Step 7: Give Your Home Server a Name

Your next task is to give your home server a unique name – this can be whatever you wish as long as it’s 15 characters maximum, and a combination of letters, numbers and hyphens only.

Okay, next up, WHS tells you it’s going to format your drives – as this point you realise your 500Gb hard drive is actually only worth 465 Gb. Hmmm…. anyway, acknowledge that you’re happy to wipe and format these drives, and select Next.

You’ll be asked if you’re really, really sure you happy to format these drives. Select Yes to continue.

Step 8: Ready to Install

A dialog box pops up that tells you that WHS is ready to install. Select “Start” to begin the installation. At this point, you can basically leave the computer to do its thing, and do something less boring instead. Depending on your setup, installation could take anywhere from 45 mins to a couple of hours. Mine took about an hour.

Step 9: Enjoy the Show

If, like me, you have nothing better to do then sit back and learn a little about the features and benefits of Windows Home Server! Watch those reboots. Then watch a few more of those great features and benefits screens….

Step 10: WHS Installation Complete

After a couple more reboots, you see that the Windows Home Server installation is complete.

But wait! You’re not yet done….

Step 11: Set a Server Password

When you select “Finish”, you’ll be asked to set yourself an administrator’s password. It’s important that this password is secure, and kept safe so Microsoft have a couple of specific requirements on the password format. It needs to be at least 7 characters and combine uppercase, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols!

Next up follows three pieces of admin – select whether you wish to switch on automatic updates (very highly recommended), join Microsoft’s Customer Experience Improvement Program and Windows Error Reporting programmes.

The first one is essential to ensure you receive any urgent bug fixes and improvements from Microsoft automatically as soon as they’re released. The second two are very useful to Microsoft – the CEIP anonymously reports a range of usage data to Microsoft (for example, how many hard drives you have, how much data you have stored on your home server) over time which the WHS team use to understand what users are doing with their home servers. This helps them plan future versions of the product – all data they look at is completely anonymous and aggregated. Windows Error Reporting automatically sends log files from your home server to Microsoft if any issues are detected – Microsoft are then able to easily spot that thousands of users are having a problem with X, understand why it’s happening, and make any necessary changes in a future Windows Update.

With that, you’re finished – congratulations, you’ve just installed Windows Home Server. But before you go, there’s a couple of things you must remember to do!

Step 12: Install Your Drivers

Your hardware will have come with a Drivers CD, which contains the software which controls the various components on your home server. You must install these drivers before continuing. Open the DVD drive, swap the Installation DVD for the drivers CD that came with your server hardware, and follow the instructions to install the drivers. Reboot the server as required.

Step 13: Remove the keyboard, monitor, and mouse

You’re ready to go headless – unplug and remove the keyboard, monitor, and mouse. From now on, you’ll be accessing the server from your home computers via the Windows Home Server console, which you’ll install from the Windows Home Server Connector CD. Some computers can be a bit funny about booting without a mouse, keyboard or monitor installed – if yours is, you should be able to switch a setting in the BIOS to allow booting to happen without firing any alerts, errors or other interruptions.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully installed Windows Home Server! You can now log into the home server, or go and install the Windows Home Server Connector on the rest of your home computers. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go through the entire setup and configuration wizard on every computer!

In the next part of our Get Started guide, we’ll install the Windows Home Server Connector on a home computer.

WHS WebBrowser

Add-ins & Apps

Internet

WHS v1

console

favorites

Firefox

internet explorer

links

web

web browser

Windows Home Server

WebBrowser integrates a web browser into the Windows Home Server Console.

Experience Level: Standard

WHS WebBrowser integrates a web browser into the Windows Home Server Console.
