The software enables multiple disks to be organized into a single pool of storage for ease, and offers additional data protection of the files and folders stored on the server through mirroring.

DriveHarmony additionally includes a unique I/O optimization feature to ensure data can be transferred to and from the server at optimum rates. The company describe the add-in as follows:

DriveHarmony™ Software by DataCore Software is a storage pooling add-in created for use with Windows Home Server 2011 operating system. DriveHarmony™ Software creates a transparent layer across assorted hardware disk devices which provides such benefits as increased performance, data protection and uninterrupted data access, and allows for future storage expansion.

All management of DriveHarmony™ Software is performed in the Windows Home Server 2011 Dashboard.

Pooling Physical Disks

DriveHarmony can “pool” one or more physical disks of variable sizes and types to create a “hard drive” that is made to look and behave like a regular disk volume while providing additional benefits. When the hard drive is created, it is automatically initialized, formatted, and assigned a drive letter. The hard drive can then be “shared” or configured for backup using features in Windows Home Server 2011 operating system.

Physical disk requirements:

o Physical disks must be non-partitioned.

o Any type of internal disk supported by the Windows® operating system can be used, such as SSD, SATA, and IDE.

o Disks may be up to 3 TB in size.

o External USB drives can be used, but are not recommended for performance reasons. Thumb drives are not supported.

Features

o Hard drives can be created in two types:

· Protected drives contain two copies of the data and provide uninterrupted access to data in case of hardware failure. If a disk should fail, the data can be used and accessed from the copy. This data protection method is known by a technical term called “mirroring” or RAID1. This type is recommended for important data files.

· UnProtected drives contain one copy of the data and therefore do not have the benefits that a protected drive does. If a disk should fail, the data on the drive is destroyed and cannot be accessed. This type is recommended for less important files that do not require protection.

o When protected drives are extended or unprotected hard drives contain more than one physical disk, data is spread across all disks. In this manner, the data can be accessed simultaneously from all disks at the same time which results in faster performance. This technique is known by a technical term called “data striping” or RAID0.

o Multiple hard drives can be created so that storage devices with similar speeds can be grouped. Drives with faster devices can be used for higher priority data.

o When the hard drive nears capacity, it can be extended to accommodate more data.

o A physical disk can be replaced seamlessly and without interruption to data access if it is part of a protected drive.
In the case of an unprotected drive, in order to replace a physical disk, the entire unprotected drive will have to be copied to a new drive. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.

All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

Testing:

StableBit DrivePool is in early BETA and has the potential for bugs. Because of the nature of this add-in there is potential for data loss. Only serious testers should consider downloading and installing the current BETA builds.

System Crashes:

Please read this and prepare your system to collect crash data:

Crash dump preparation

Your data integrity can be compromised with this test build. Use at your own risk, and only with non-essential data!

Introducing the beta, the developer adds:

I just want to make a short blurb on the future of DrivePool. Performance was not at all a priority for this build, so don’t expect it to fly. The next order of business will be to implement a faster I/O pipeline. The already was an experimental build using a much faster I/O technique and it worked pretty well. So the next order of business will be to fix the nastiest bugs and make it go really fast. I will make a full blog post explaining the technology behind DrivePool and how everything works in a few days.

So, if you have a test system available and you’re up for some serious testing, check out the link below.

Download: StableBit DrivePool v1.0.0.498 Beta

Drive Bender Beta is Now Live

Add-in News

Add-ins & Apps

beta

Drive Bender

hard drive

storage pool

whs

windows home server 2011

So, the first storage pooling application is out of the blocks - Drive Bender Beta 1 is now available to download.

So, the first storage pooling application is out of the blocks – Drive Bender Beta 1 is now available to download.

As we previously reported, the application aims to bring Drive-Extender-style storage pooling to a wide range of Windows SKUs, including compatibility with Windows Home Server 2011. Unfortunately, the Windows Home Server 2011 add-in has not made it into the first beta, but it will follow soon, allowing the storage pool to be created and managed from within the Dashboard. That said, you can still use Drive Bender’s standard management console as you would on other versions of Windows.

So, if you’re feeling in the mood for testing, download the beta and let us know your thoughts.
<img width="150" height="150" It’s time to let this particular cat out of this particular bag, and start a new closed beta.

Feedsource for Windows Home Server is an Add-In that publishes authenticated Really Simple Syndication (“RSS”) feeds for your Shared Folders through the Remote Access web site. Authorized users access Feedsource RSS feeds from inside or outside your home network, using any RSS reader that supports authenticated feeds, to view the latest changes in your Shared Folders.

Key features:

· Authenticated RSS feeds for Shared Folders that show create, delete, rename, and change events for files and directories

· Automatic integration with the Remote Access web site to view feeds from outside your network with no extra port-forwarding or configuration

· Simple setup through the Windows Home Server Console

· Secure authentication and authorization using SSL and existing Windows Home Server access controls

Developing Feedsource has been one of those great experiences where the idea is simple and the functionality is immediately useful to everyone in the household. I’m hoping my Google-fu didn’t fail me, because I’m very surprised that no one (including me; all credit for the idea goes to my wife) thought of this for Windows Home Server sooner!

Some examples of the cool possibilities we see for Feedsource feeds:

· Automatically notify your whole family when a new movie is ripped to the server, instead of tracking them all down one by one and telling them

· Use the feed for the “Videos” share as a “still to watch” list

· Know when your kids save their homework to the server for you to review when you’re away on business

· Let everyone know when you add another set of pictures to your baby album

We’ve been using Feedsource in our network for a couple of months now, and it really reduces cognitive load if you consume a lot of media. I just finished ripping all seven seasons of Buffy from DVD to MKV, and I’m using the “Videos” Feedsource feed to keep track of which episode we’re up to.

If you can think of other nifty ways to use RSS feeds for your Shared Folders, drop them into the comments below; I’m sure there are lots more we haven’t thought about yet!

If you’re interested in participating in the initial closed CTP, please get in touch (be sure to include the name and version number of the RSS reader you plan to use). We’re looking for testers who are just as excited about Feedsource as we are, and who want to contribute to making Feedsource as awesome as it can be.

We’re expecting this to be a short test, and we hope to get a public release out before Christmas. Feedsource will be available as a fully-featured 30-day trial (just like our other Add-Ins), and will retail for US$10.

Sign Up for the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program

Digital Media Receivers

News

beta

kinect

microsoft connect

preview program

tester

xbox live update

Those rumoured Kinect beta testing slots may have now been filled, but if you’re eager to get a taste of your gaming and entertainment future, Microsoft have just opened up the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program.
