Here’s an interesting statistic. A few weeks ago we ran a poll asking Windows Home Server 2011 users what, if any, additional storage management software they were running on their servers. The idea was to primarily see how the new storage pooling apps for the platform were competing – but I was surprised to see just how many users felt the need to protect and pool their data with additional storage management support.

Windows Home Server 2011 Step by Step – Part 15: Backing Up Your Server
Using Windows Home Server 2011 to protect your data is a great first step in the quest for peace of mind, but it is only a first step. You can back up your data from your PCs to the server, great, but what happens if the server itself fails? Or is stolen? With regard to server failure, that can be mitigated in part by the ability to backup the server itself (which we’ll cover separately later). Otherwise, keeping a backup off-site, at a family member, friend’s house or even the office is a great idea. As ever, WHS 2011 makes it easy.

Add-in Update: Drive Bender v1.3.0.0
A new release of Drive Bender, a storage pooling add-in for Windows Home Server 2011, has just hit the web. The update brings a new user interface, drive swapping capability and thin provisioning amongst other improvements.

Add-in Update: Lights-Out Service Pack 2
Lights-Out, the power management add-in for Windows Home Server v1 and 2011, has had a Service Pack release today. The big news in this version is the addition of a client for Apple Mac OS X, allowing monitoring and management of the server from Mac clients.

Windows Home Server 2011 Step by Step – Part 14: Doing More With Add-ins
So far, we’ve discussed the features built-in to Windows Home Server 2011, and there are a lot of them to cover. But Microsoft cleverly designed the software to be extendable – so developers can create applications (called add-ins in the WHS world) which literally add new features to the platform. Over the four years of Windows Home Server v1’s life, community developers released well over one hundred add-ins for the platform, and we’re well on the way to seeing a great selection of apps for WHS 2011 too.

Windows Home Server 2011 Step by Step – Part 13: Accessing Your Server Remotely
In the world of technology, Remote Access is a term used to describe the ability to log on to a network from a distant location. Remote Web Access (RWA) is Microsoft’s terminology for remote access to a local network from a remote location over the web (Internet). It differs from other remote access technologies (for example VPN) as your remote access experience is conducted via a web browser, rather than a remote access application or client.
With RWA, everything on your server (and compatible computers on your local network) can be accessible from anywhere in the world – via a PC, Mac, Tablet or Smartphone.

Add-in Update: StableBit DrivePool v1.0.1.6008
StableBit DrivePool combines the individual hard drives on your server into a storage pool and offers enhanced folder duplication features for data protection.

Add-in Update: LDisk v3.0.0.2
LDisk adds iSCSI Target Storage capability to your Server. Using LDisk, you can create a single appliance to provide all your storage and backup needs.
