point, click, and go; thumb-texting.

At CES, the year of the Cloud service continues, this time with Acer whose AcerCloud file-synchronisation service will ship with new PCs and Android devices in Quarter 2 2012. Just don’t mention iCloud, okay?

The company’s Cloud service allows remote users to connect and wake up their Acer PCs at any time (as long as the PC is in Standby or Hibernation mode) to retrieve files and stream media. That’s perhaps the one original feature that differentiated AcerCloud from Apple’s iCloud service.

Otherwise, AcerCloud apes Cupertino’s offering, with the automatic synchronisation of files, photos (called PicStream, not Photo Stream) and media, allowing users to purchase a movie on their PC and view it on their Acer SmartPhone. Files are available for 30 days before they’ll need to be downloaded to “long-term storage”.

Remote media streaming will be delivered courtesy of Acer’s clear.fi in the Cloud (not iTunes in the Cloud, okay?) which can push media directly to mobile devices, or allow content to be downloaded.

New Acer PCs and Android smartphones will be supported on AcerCloud from Q2 2012, whilst Windows Phones are set to join in later in the year.

Show Press ReleaseHide Press Release

AcerCloud Connects All Personal Devices Securely for Anytime, Anywhere Access to Digital Media and Data

Intelligent connectivity and storage — in a personal cloud space

LAS VEGAS, USA (January 8, 2012) — Acer today previewed its upcoming AcerCloud, which securely connects all personal smart devices for anytime, anywhere access. Featuring Acer Always Connect technology, users can retrieve multimedia and data files anytime, even when their main PC is in sleep (standby/hibernation) mode. Users can enjoy these advantages knowing that their information is stored and transferred securely via strong encryption and authentication. Bringing users tremendous functionality and value, Acer will include the AcerCloud, without additional cost, on all new Acer consumer PCs.

Acer reduces the complexities of today’s fast-paced lifestyles by developing solutions that enable devices to communicate, simplifying the process of content sharing. With the ever-growing number of smart digital devices, users need to share and back up their multimedia and data files in a simple, smart way.

Create, acquire and consume on different devices

AcerCloud makes it easy to take photos on a smartphone while on the go, and then view them on a main PC at home or in the office, without the delay and complication of manually transferring files. It also allows users to purchase a movie from an all-in-one PC, and then watch it on a tablet or smartphone on a train or airplane. As long as the main PC is in sleep (standby/hibernation) mode, Acer Always Connect technology can wake it up through Wi-Fi® so media can be retrieved via a mobile device. AcerCloud, meanwhile, intelligently uses local and cloud storage together so all data is always available. Other features of AcerCloud include:

PicStream

Through PicStream, users can take holiday snapshots on their smartphone, back them up on the main PC, and share them efficiently with other smart devices. Users can stream photos via clear.fi in the Cloud to PCs and other devices; photos are backed up permanently on their PC, and temporarily accessible for 30 days in their personal cloud and on other devices.

AcerCloud Docs

Professionals can update sales documents on a PC and save them, and the documents will be put into the personal cloud and streamed to other devices. They can then go to their meeting with their notebook or tablet PC and have immediate access to all the updated files. The files will be temporarily accessible for 30 days in the personal cloud and on the devices, or they can choose to download the files on to other devices for long-term storage.

clear.fi Media

With Acer’s unique clear.fi Media application, users can also access all their multimedia at any time. They can use clear.fi to connect to the personal cloud and stream live, or download and enjoy content offline for convenient on-the-go entertainment.

Acer Inc. President Jim Wong stated, “AcerCloud not only provides the simplicity and efficiency when accessing and sharing data, but it’s also free with a new Acer PC and gives our users peace-of-mind, knowing that their data is safely transferred in a personal cloud space.”

AcerCloud will be bundled on all Acer consumer PCs starting Q2 2012. It will support all Android devices, while future support is planned for Windows-based devices. The service will be available in America, Europe, Asia and China.

CES 2012: LaCie Delivers New Thunderbolt Storage Lines

Apple Mac

Hardware

News

Storage

2big

apple mac

esata

hub

lacie

thunderbolt

LaCie today announced two new additions to its range of Thunderbolt storage products, in the shape of the 2big Thunderbolt Series and eSATA Thunderbolt Series, the latter allowing users to connect external eSATA drives to new Macs via its Thunderbolt connection.

LaCie today announced two new additions to its range of Thunderbolt storage products, in the shape of the 2big Thunderbolt Series and eSATA Thunderbolt Series, the latter allowing users to connect external eSATA drives to new Macs via its Thunderbolt connection.

The 2big Thunderbolt series follows LaCie’s debut Little Big Disk Thunderbolt device, with a two-bay direct attached storage system delivering transfer speeds up to 311 MB/s – more than three times faster than Firewire 800. A second Thunderbolt connector is included on the Hub to allow users to connect additional Thunderbolt compatible devices. It’s taken a grip of the home and small business server market for sure this year, courtesy of the original N36L in 2010 and refreshed N40L model this year. But look carefully at HP’s Maintenance and Service Guide for the MicroServer, and you’ll see the company has apparently been testing a much more powerful version of the model.

Detailing the MicroServer’s BIOS configuration, HP unwittingly included a screenshot of a prototype model, running AMD’s Turion II Neo N54L processor – a dual-core chip, clocking in at 2.2GHz and, according to AMD, more than a match for Intel’s Core i5 processor.

The current MicroServer, the N40L, ships with a 1.5 GHz version of the same processor whilst it’s predecessor coped with AMD’s Athlon II NEO chip, running at 1.3GHz. HP’s prototype shows the same meagre 1GB RAM.

At this point, no updates to the MicroServer line have been announced, and the screenshots may well have been taken from an engineering sample that would not see the light of day. But the prospect of a more powerful MicroServer is tantalising for advanced users, providing a mid-point offer between the entry-level N40L, and HP’s ProLiant ML 115 which is most definitely a business-class device.

Does the world need a more powerful MicroServer? Would you buy one, and how much should it cost? Let us know your thoughts.

(Thanks to Arie for the tip.)

The IOGEAR GW3DHDKIT: Making Your TV a Wireless Device

Hardware

News

TV

GW3DHDKIT

IOGEAR

wireless

If you want to mount your TV on a wall, cutting the cord between your TV and the rest of your Home Entertainment devices presents a challenge. Relying on the 5GHz wireless spectrum, the Wireless 3D Digital Kit does not require a line-of-sight placement, and delivers uncompressed full 1080p, 3D content and 5.1 digital audio up to 100 feet.

The IOGEAR Wireless 3D Digital Kit consists of a transmitter and receiver with connections that allow it to stream standard, HD or 3D resolution content from up to two HDMI® enabled devices. Included with the kit are an IR blast cable, a remote control, and two power adapters. To add a second room, one HDTV can connect directly to the transmitter’s loop-through (local) port, while a second HDTV simultaneously receives content via the wireless receiver. A “Floating HDTV” can be set up by connecting two HD or 3D media sources to the wireless transmitter while a wall-mounted TV receives content from the connected wireless receiver.

The Wireless 3D Digital Kit is housed in a sleek black casing with rounded edges, giving it a modern but understated appearance. The unobtrusive transmitter, receiver, IR blast cable and remote control underscore just what a powerful device the Wireless 3D Digital Kit really is. Streaming high-bandwidth 3D and 1080p content up to 100 feet is made possible by the use of 5GHz technology, which is generally less susceptible to network interference and can carry more data than its 2.4 GHz relative.

By supporting devices such as 3D Blu-ray and DVD players, DVR/set-top boxes and game consoles, the Wireless 3D Digital Kit allows users to keep their components neatly out-of-sight and keep the focus on their celebrated HD or 3D TVs. Perfect as a DIY retrofit solution, the built-in Infrared (IR) pass-though allows user control over source devices that are hidden away in a different location. Additionally, the GW3DHDKIT is HDCP 2.0 Compliant and requires no software or driver installation.

“Our Wireless 3D Digital Kit advances the technology of streaming A/V content and is a perfect fit for those who already have a 3D display or are planning to get one,” said Bill Nguyen, Senior Marketing Manager for IOGEAR. “The GW3DHDKIT offers an easy, affordable way to stream both HD and 3D entertainment discretely with multiple retrofit and installation options.”

For its initial launch, the Wireless 3D Digital Kit will be available online at Costco.com. A nationwide roll-out that includes shopIOGEAR.com, brick and mortar retailers and online resellers will happen in later in Q4 2011. MSRP of the Wireless 3D Digital Kit is $349.95.

Hands On: Bitfenix Outlaw Computer Case

Hardware

News

Reviews

Bitfenix

case

chassis

computer

Outlaw

review

value

The Outlaw is another computer case Bitfenix that has great looks and finish for a great price. If for some reason there is a failure in one of the units, the other one will seamlessly take over to prevent the loss of power to the PC. You can usually even replace the damaged unit without taking the machine down. This is called hot swapping, and is an essential productivity backup for use in servers and other machines used by a number of people.

All this brings us to the iStarUSA/XEAL IS-500R8P 500W PS2 Mini Redundant Power Supply,

<img style="background-image: none; To start with, if you are looking for a non-rackmounted case with maximum expansion options that can hold a *LOT* of hard drives for a Windows Home Server, you may find a few cases that can hold more than the XL, but not many.

Next, you will find the same quality of construction and features I have seen in their other cases, which are significant in themselves. Since the time I reviewed I the Define R3, I have even noticed one particular improvement that makes a build just a bit easier. Before we get to specifics, however, we first need to find out

What’s In The Box?

Before we get inside, we must first get past the external packaging. This particular computer case comes with consumer-style packaging to give you a very good idea of what you will find inside.

<img style="background-image: none; Not only is TS a great value for your money, it also is the UPS that is extremely easy to handle. TS fulfills the requirements of many types of users.

Being that this UPS is a 2000VA/1200W device, it should satisfy even the most power-hungry home computer or small/medium server.

What’s In The Box?

As a consumer-oriented product, the TS2250B comes packaged in typical consumer-oriented packaging, which provides the potential customer a reasonable idea of what they are getting if he/she were to purchase this item.

Most of the products that I review for WGS are centered around one of three areas.

Windows Home Server software and hardware

Media devices

Networking products

Today I am taking a look at the Fractal Design Core 1000 case.

It is not exactly a WHS case, as it’s not a gargantuan chassis that holds 20 drives or more, or of a diminutive size that many use such as a Shuttle case. It is really not an HTPC case for housing a mini-ITX motherboard, although one could certainly make use of it for either type of build. It can hold two 3.5” HDs or three 2.5” HDs internally, and it is capable of housing either a micro-ATX or mini-ITX motherboard. It has the ability to mount two 5.25” external, or one 5.25” and one 3.5” external devices.

What I do see this case being used for is for your basic desktop computer. It is small enough to be easily placed under a desk or on top of it for easy access to I/O components such as USB ports or a DVD drive. As it costs “only” $40, you will have plenty of dough left over for a faster CPU or perhaps more/faster memory. Your choice.

Both Terry and I are big Fractal Design fans because of the quality of construction and features we have seen in their cases – but they’re not the cheapest on offer. So, you might ask, what did they cut out to make the Core 1000 this inexpensive?

To answer that question, read on.

What’s In The Box?

Before we get inside, we must first get past the external packaging. There is no consumer-style packaging for this case, just the shipping box as seen below. Saving #1 that is passed on to you, the consumer.

<img style="background-image: none;
