Windows Home Server 2011 Step by Step – Part 19: Streaming Music, Video and Photos to Network Devices
A general definition for “server” is something that serves or is used in serving. A more specific definition of the kind of server we’ve been discussing in the book is a host computer which serves the needs of client computers in a Local Area Network (LAN).
For the purposes of this chapter, serving the needs of a client involves a very basic function: serving files to the clients in a network. In this chapter, we will be discussing how Windows Home Server 2011 integrates with various network devices – PCs, network media receivers, games consoles and Connected TVs to share and stream media files. Yes, unless you’re really into backup, it’s time to talk about the fun stuff – Entertainment.

No longer are many households exclusively Windows-based – there are now a variety of operating systems in play. With Windows Home Server 2011, Microsoft wisely took the decision to offer basic support for Apple’s operating system, Whilst not all of the platform’s features are available, but if you’re running Mac clients at home, you can certainly get those shiny slabs of aluminium and acrylic working together with WHS 2011.

Windows Home Server 2011 Step by Step – Part 16: Recovering Your Server
One of the frequently requested enhancements to Windows Home Server v1 was the ability to back up and restore the server. In this original version, you could back up your shared folders. You could not back up the server itself in the case of an Operating System hard drive failure, virus, corrupted disk, or other catastrophe. You could only back up the client backup database through an add-in.
With Windows Home Server 2011, all that changed. You can now back up any part of the file system of your home server, or the entire file structure. Creating such a backup was discussed in the last chapter.
In this chapter, we are going to discuss how to restore this data to your server in the event of a catastrophe.

Hands On: Tranquil PC Riley Server
Over the last five years, Manchester’s Tranquil PC has been right at the forefront of home server hardware development with a range of increasingly good looking custom chassis. Their latest effort, the Tranquil PC Riley Server is unconventional in the fact that it splits system and storage across two devices (the accompanying four drive Riley Storage unit is available as an option). Whilst that configuration may lead to two boxes sitting on your desktop, the result still looks great.
