LaCie Boasts “World’s Fastest” Portable External Hard Drive

This week, LaCie took the wraps off what they’re calling the “World’s Fastest” portable external hard drive.

The new model, named the LaCie Little Big Disk, featuring Thunderbolt 2 pushes 4K video files around faster than it takes to say the product name. Well, not quite, but with read/write speeds approaching 1,375 MB/s we’re not too far away.

LaCie, now fully owned by storage giant Seagate, achieve the speeds quoted by pairing their Little Big Disk with high–performing solid state drives – a pair of 500 GB PCIe Gen 2 SSDs. According to the company, performance can be pushed even further by daisy-chaining two Little Big Disks together to achieve speeds faster than the maximum Thunderbolt 2 transfer rate. Tests conducted by LaCie with two Little Big Disks connected in parallel to Apple’s  new Mac Pro saw speeds up to 2,600 MB/s.

Positioned for video professionals, up to five  Little Big Disks plus a 4K display can be daisy-chained simultaneously and connected to a computer via a single cable.

Expect pricing to be as premium as the Little Big Disk’s performance, with 1TB SSD capacity starting at $1299.

Hope it’s better than their NAS devices… not counting on it.
