How To: Install Windows Home Server 2011 Updates via the Dashboard

Recently, while I was configuring the AWIECO RemoteLauncher add-in, I stumbled upon some hidden functionality built into the Windows Home Server 2011 Dashboard application.  Normally, I have no alerts present in Information and Alerts area of my dashboard.  So, imagine my surprise when an Alert flashed up recently.

Double-click on the alert notification to open the ‘Alert Viewer’.

On this occasion, I was presented with a warning that important updates should be installed on my home server. Click on the alert on the left side of the window for more information about the alert. For this alert, I was presented an option at the bottom of the window to open Windows Update.

Click the ‘Open Windows Update’ link. This presented me with the Windows Update application for my home server.

Just to add to this for the newbies to WHS 2011, the Alert section will also show you if important updates need to be applied to the attached client computers.

If you network is anything like mine, there’s always a family member connected to the network that procrastinates updating their PC, maybe because you’ve told them not to install anything that pops up without consulting you beforehand!

I always wait a day or two and then tell them to go ahead and update, and then check back with the WHS 2011 alerts. Great!

You don’t need all these steps. From the Server Settings dialogue box simply hit Change/Install updates. That takes you straight to the update panel.

It’s a shame there’s no way to automate installation of these, especially as some as security updates (albeit with a lower severity on Windows Server 2008 R2, compared to other older OSs). I’ve read that they can be unselected whilst they’re still downloading, even if they’re high priority. But it does seem like I’m hassled every month to install them. Very annoying.

If you set up WSUS you can automate the process, it just needs a little bit of group policy or registry changes to make it work.
