When you install a new hard disk drive in your home server, you will want to designate what that drive is used for. Do NOT attempt to move the data using the Windows Home Server’s Explorer application. Microsoft provides a wizard to move the data via the Dashboard application exactly for this purpose. To demonstrate how this wizard works, I will be moving my Client Backup Folder from a 250GB drive to a 1TB drive. Let’s get started.
Open the Windows Home Server 2011 Dashboard application and select the ‘Server Folder and Hard Drives’ tab, highlight the folder you want to move, and then select the ‘Move the folder’ task.
Please review all of the information presented on the opening Move a Folder dialog box and click the ‘Next’ button when you’re ready to proceed.
Ensure the destination drive has more free space then the folder you are moving. Choose the ‘New location:’ and click the ‘Move folder’ button.
As the folder starts to move, do not try to open the folder you are moving.
Once the folder move has completed, you will be afforded an opportunity to configure your server’s backup. If you have another folder to move, select the ‘Close’ button and repeat the above steps.
If you are finished moving folders, click on the ‘Open’ button to start the server backup wizard.
The Customize Server Backup dialog box will open, click ‘Next’ to continue.
Choose your configuration option. I will select ‘Change Server Backup settings’.
Now you can select the server’s backup destination and click ‘Next’.
Give each server backup destination disk a name and click the ‘Next’.
Configure the server’s backup schedule and click ‘Next’.
Select the items you want the server to include in the server backup and click ‘Next’.
Confirm the server backup settings and click ‘Apply settings’ when you are ready.
After several minutes, you will receive a message that your server backup configuration has completed – click ‘Close’.
This brings you back to the Move a Folder wizard, click ‘Close’.
Take a look at your dashboard and notice that the folder is no longer on the original drive. In my demonstration I moved the Client Computer Backups folder from the F: drive to the D: drive. Additionally, you may notice the shrinkage of free space on the D: drive, this is a result of the data being moved.
Repeat the process for any additional drives. Note that you do not need to configure the server backup until you finish moving all folders.
