Well ahead of next week’s tech fest at CES in Las Vegas, Western Digital today announced a new two drive NAS, offering up to 6TB network storage and a wide range of media and data protection features.
The all new My Book Live Duo, compatible with both Macs and PCs alike, ships in 4TB (2 x 2TB) and 6TB (2 x 3TB) configurations, with RAID 1 data protection providing continuous mirroring of your data on to its second drive for protection. A “spanning mode” is available to combine both drives into one large storage pool, should RAID protection not be required.
The My Book Live Duo is powered by a reasonably-humble 800 MHz processor, with Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed file access on the local network. Storage can be further expanded on the device by attaching an external hard drive to the device’s rear USB 2.0 port.
Western Digital are positioning the device as offering “Personal Cloud” features, meaning you can access the device at home remotely via the company’s website at www.WD2go.com via your computer’s web browser. Mobile apps for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch as well as Android-based smartphones and tablets can also be used to access the device on the hoof.
Media features include an onboard server, supporting the streaming of music, video and pictures to any DLNA certified device, including media receivers, connected Blu-ray and TVs, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Users can also stream movies, photos and music to their tablet or smartphone directly from My Book Live Duo via WD’s mobile app.
The My Book Live Duo is available now at £409.90/$399 for the 4TB device, and £499.90/$499 for 6TB.
