PTVU1000

Hands On: NETGEAR PTVU1000 Universal Push2TV HD Adapter

Introduction

What is a flat screen LCD or LED television?  The answer of course, when looked at from the perspective of a computer user, is a computer monitor.  A computer monitor which has been reengineered to include a television tuner and the corresponding I/O for viewing television programming.  With these modern displays, one can hook up a computer to browse the Internet, play videos, listen to music, and/or view pictures.

If one has a computer sitting around for such a use.

For the readers of WGS, we all know that the bonus of having a central storage device, such as a Windows Home Server, sitting in a corner somewhere to feed all this data from.  But perhaps you do not have a computer hooked up to your TV.  Maybe you have an Xbox or media player hooked up to your TV, or maybe you have an Internet-ready TV.  All of these combinations have their advantages and their limitations.

For many, the home will have only a computer which acts as both their workstation and their server.  In many cases this is a notebook.  They upload their pictures to their computer, watch YouTube videos, do their Facebook thing, browse the Internet, perhaps watch Netflix.  For these users, an easy way to get that information from the computer directly to their TV for group viewing may be highly desirable.

Intel has their Wireless Display technology for their newer systems that directly provides the PC side of this feature.  For the rest of us, an adapter to generate (and receive) this signal is needed. Which brings me finally to the topic of today’s review, the NETGEAR PTVU1000 Universal Push2TV Adapter.

If you want to turn your LCD/LED TV into an extension of your computer’s display, this may be just the product for you.

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Thanks for the review. I have a question: if I also want to use it with a laptop which DOES have Intel widi, then do I STILL have to use the PC Adapter part?

    Thanks,

NETGEAR has one specifically for you, the PTV2000.  If this is only machine you would using this feature on, I would go that route.  Otherwise the PTVU1000 would be the way to go for multiple machines.  I cannot be 100% sure, but I see no reason why you could not use this adapter with the Intel machine, as it simply uses universal USB display/sound drivers.
