Acer RevoCenter RC111 Available in Japan By End of October

We’ve been teased with the prospect of Acer’s Windows Home Server 2011-packing RevoCenter RC100 series throughout the year, but finally it looks like the server is getting its global roll-out. Acer Japan today revealed release dates and pricing for the Atom-based system.

The Acer RevoCenter RC111 will ship for around 40,000 Yen (£335/$523) in stores across Japan by the end of October, according to a press release from the company. The server is built around Intel’s Atom D525 dual-core processor, with a compact chassis supporting four internal hard drives. External expansion is available via three USB 2.0 ports (1 x Front, 2 x Rear) and, according to previously released specification documents, a further two USB 3.0 ports (although we’ll wait to confirm USB 3.0 support when the product finally ships). Up to 4GB RAM can be fitted across 2 memory slots, and your networking will be of the Gigabit variety.

No further news on release dates in other territories, but we can expect news to start dripping out slowly from other territories soon.

It will be nice to see something on the market (if and when it finally is available). But with the exception of USB 3, this is an old EasyStore in a remodeled case that look a heck of a lot like the Lenovo IdeaCenter.

I’m tired of seeing companies continue to release lackluster performance units that feature Intels total garbage line of processors (Atom). Sure they are energy effecint but if basic processes take forever efficiency becomes worthless.

Search online everyone who has an Acer or an HP system would like to upgrade it so why are we still featuring outdated junk?

Actually, these are great for the crowd that just wants to take advantage of the robust backup features of WHS and perhaps a bit of filesharing.  Nothing more is needed.  It would be great if they’d put out more powerful models for those who’d like to do more advanced work with the servers, though.

Salazarjohn: It is more than enough for my needs. I am currently a happy user of the HP Microserver. It is more than enough performance to saturate a gigabit port, which is what I need. After that has been saturated, I care about power usage and price. Small servers like this is exactly what I want at home.
I also happen to live in Japan, so this is somewhat relevant to my interests. However, I cannot understand why I would pay 40.000Yen for this, if I can have the Microserver for about 23.000Yen.  Also, the Microserver has 8GB ECC memory limit, while this Acer thing can only accept 4GB non-ECC memory. This is key if you are aiming to use ZFS.

What would the experts here recommend in terms of parts in building one’s own server? I am a new hobbyist and want to set one of these up for my home office. I have 5 employees so centralized storage of shared files, hard drive back-ups, and remote access will be key. I also here that motherboard selection is key for compatibility issues. How do I determine which motherboard will “play nice” with WHS 2011?Much Appreciated,Jeremy

Try looking at the HP Microserver. Sounds perfect for what you need and it’s as cheap/cheaper than building your own if you are looking at a small sized server.

        Also a very good suggestion.

        Andre,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I would definitely want to upgrade the OS HD and RAM on the microserver!

Most modern motherboards will play nice with WHS 2011 – it’s a modern OS. What you need to think about are a. How much storage you want on board (number of drives) which will dictate how many SATA ports you need b. How compact you want the server to be, which will inform your motherboard and chassis size, and finally c. How powerful you need the server to be, which will dictate your processor choice.

Most self-built WHS 2011 servers I’ve seen to date go for a Mini-ITX motherboard with either an Intel Atom or Core i3 (or AMD equivalent) processor, with 2 or 4GB RAM. If it’s for home office use (no video transcoding required) then an Intel Atom may well be fine for you. There are a few decent looking, multi-drive chassis out there from the likes of Fractal Design or Lian-Li if you dig around.

Meh! Just another slow Atom piece of junk the world has so not been waiting for…
Recently upgraded my rig with a i3-2120T (Dual Core SB at 2.6 Mhz with 35 watt TDP).
I wonder why no (leading) System Builder would offer this kind of performance for a Home Server.

You know, this story has been floating around for several weeks. It is now the 21st of October. There are only 10 days left in the month.

    1.   I am being to wonder if this is some sort of “trick or treat’.

    2.   I don’t live in Japan, so what the heck if they get it anyway.
