In the last two parts of our OS X Lion Server series, we took a detailed look at one of the more advanced aspects of the platform, in the shape of Lion’s Profile Manager. Today, we’re going back to basics with a look at one of the most vital aspects of a server platform – file and folder sharing. For those of you in all Mac households, you’ll quite rightly expect Lion Server file and folder sharing to work out of the box, and (barring any bugs) that’s pretty much what you’ll get. But with many WGS readers running or considering running mixed Mac and PC infrastructures, how well does OS X Lion Server play in that scenario? Let’s find out.

Hands On: Opti-UPS TS2250B Uninterruptible Power Supply
Many WGS readers have a strong background in computers and a great many of you are in the Information Technology (IT) field. Which means that most of you appreciate the value of a Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) for always-on equipment such as a business server. This type of equipment cannot afford to lose power or lose power without a graceful shutdown of the computer in the event of an extended power loss.
While home servers may not be as critical in this regard as a business server, the same need to maintain power for short losses of power, and the ability to allow a graceful shutdown if the loss of power is longer is still a very desirable feature to have. With 2000VA of reserve battery backup power, the Opti-UPS Thunder Shield TS2250B may be just what you need for your home server.

Acer RevoCenter RC111 Available in Japan By End of October
We’ve been teased with the prospect of Acer’s Windows Home Server 2011-packing RevoCenter RC100 series throughout the year, but finally it looks like the server is getting its global roll-out. Acer Japan today revealed release dates and pricing for the Atom-based system.

Hands On: NETGEAR WN3000RP Universal WiFi Range Extender
The NETGEAR WN3000RP is the first Wi-Fi extender I have had the opportunity to play with. I was quite pleased with how easy it was to setup and use this device.
QNAP Updates Their Firmware on Older NAS to Include Mac OS X Lion Support

Just one week after announcing their 8-bay 2U rackmount NAS units, QNAP has come back with a pair of 12-bay 2U rackmount NAS units. Introducing the Intel Quad-core Intel Xeon powered TS-EC1279U-RP and the Dual-core Intel Core i3 powered CPUTS-1279U-RP which, like the 8-bay TS-EC879U-RP or TS-879U-RP NAS units, are designed as an Enterprise solution. For those looking for the latest and fastest solutions from QNAP for an Enterprise environment in a 12-bay unit, look no further.

Orbital Backup Configuration – Status Update
Earlier in the week, Orbital Technologies released its Backup Configuration add-in, providing Mac Time Machine support for Windows Home Server 2011. We’ve had around 400 downloads of the add-in so far, and the support forum has been busy with readers sharing their experiences with the add-in.

A New Design For We Got Served
After a couple of years with the same look and feel for We Got Served, I thought it was about time we splashed a little bit of paint around and have a tidy up. You’re seeing the results of a new design for the site that we’ve been working on for a couple of weeks, and finally dropped in yesterday (thanks for your patience during the downtime).
