Hands On: Edimax BR-6258n 150Mbps Wireless Broadband Nano Router

Introduction

Edimax calls their BR-6258n device a router.  Specifically a “150Mbps Wireless Broadband Nano Router”.  I basically agree with most of that designation.

  • Yes, it is a 150Mbps wireless device.
  • Broadband?  I suppose that depends upon how you define broadband.
  • Nano?  Compared to the Edimax EW-7811Un adapter, no.  Compared to a typical router, yes.
  • Router?  Yes and no?

To explain that last bullet, I would call the BR-6258n a “router” and a whole lot more.  Yes, it is a router.  But it is also a wireless Access Point.  And a wireless repeater.  And a Wi-Fi adapter.  A Wi-Fi adapter not just for your PC, Mac or Linux computer, but also for your Xbox, Printer, PS3 and more.

This is the Swiss Army Knife of Wi-Fi communication in your home.  And on the road.  Or so it would seem, and that is what I am here to find out.

What’s In The Box?

Edimax ships the BR-6258n in a tastefully designed non-flamboyant box.

Once removed, the contents consists of a Quick Installation Guide, the router, an Installation CD, an Ethernet Cable, power brick, a Thank You/feedback request card, and a micro-USB cable (not shown).

and the micro-USB port on the other end.  The arrow on the left points to a reset switch, while the arrow on the right points to the LED status array.  Yes, this is definitely a nano sized router.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I have one of these little guys. And im extremly satisfied with its performance and adaptability. And all for a very low price.

YOU Sir have saved me hours and hours with this guide, to advertise that it does have this function and to not provide good instructions like you have is a negative while performance is a positive. Thankyou for this guide. Really

can this be used to connect a slingbox to a ’3′ MiFi dongle to connect the slingbox to the internet?

Great review!  I also have one of these little guys and use it as a travel router.  I primarily use it to connect to the hotel’s WiFi as a single client and extend my personal WLAN to all the devices in my hotel room.  this is particularly useful when the hotel charges a usage rate per connected device per day!

    Hi there,
I am trying to set up my Edimax BR6258n using the EZmax software. When I reach the password window I get a message saying ‘Please chexk out the connection’. It happens every time and I cannot set up my router? Is there a way around this and if there is I would appreciate a step-by-step guide as I am new to setting things like this up! Thank you for your help!

    Jim,

I found your review, and registered here, because of product research on this item.  I have a very specific question that I hope you can answer.

Can the wifi broadcast be turned off, and the WAN/LAN ports be used simultaneously, so that it in effect becomes a managed single port switch?

    Thanks,
    Karmana

(Why?  We need a tiny, pingable device to test a connection that is on a tower 40′ up, that fits in a 1′x1′ box – along with a modem, power adapters, cabling, etc…)

Hi there.  I think you’ve missed a great opportunity to extol on an incredible function of this little widget.  I have one of these and am an international traveller.  You said, ”
The biggest challenge you may face would if you are an international traveler and need to use a wall socket to power up the device.”
Here’s the thing:  You ACTUALLY DON’T NEED a wall socket to POWER UP the device.  The device comes with a USB-Micro USB cable that will power up the device WITHOUT the need to bring along the adapter.  My laptop’s always on my hotel table, but my iPhone / iPad is on the bed with me as reading material when I sleep.  I simply plug the USB-Micro USB into one of my spare ports in my laptop for power and voila.  This is why I bought this device and why I sing its praises.  Disclosure: I do not work for Edimax, nor am engaged directly or indirectly with the sale of its products.  My only interest is as a consumer of this product.
