Hands On: AVerMedia HomeFree AVplus ATSC Version

Introduction

If you desire a TV tuner for your computer, any old tuner will do.  Whether that be a USB tuner, PCI tuner, or PCIe tuner.  Please note the use of singular terminology, as in one tuner for one computer.  If you have multiple computers in a home network and you desire the ability to watch TV on any of those computers, then you really should consider a network-based tuner.  One such device is the AVerMedia HomeFree AVplus.

The HomeFree tuner is your basic networked single-tuner device with a slight twist to the feature set.  Read on to find out what twists the AVerMedia HomeFree AVplus has.

What’s In The Box?

AVerMedia’s packaging is almost subdued compared to some of the packaging I have seen on other products lately.  Due to the iPad craze, AVerMedia certainly wants you to know that you can watch TV on your iPad, as this is the prominent message just about everywhere on the packaging.

You will find the specifications and the package contents listings sans the iPad message.

As can be seen below, the contents come to you well secured.

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Hi, Jim, Thanks for these great comments. Like what you said, this is a great nice product. My husband have brought one last week, we were very happy after using it, probably will keep it. You probably don't believe some of my use of this device. One thing we have been enjoying is that to watch Sunday morning cooking show on our outdoor patio with a nice breakfast brunch, iPad with a little stand become our perfect companion over this weekend. My husband and I really love it. However what I found is that some of the HD channels is not showed up in my iPad, maybe this is the software issue you were talked about?

Hi, Due to the limits of first generation iPad video capacity, HD channels are only supported in iPad2 application, sorry for the inconvenience. – Avermedia tech support
