Announcing TouchPad Talk

For some time now, like many, I’ve been tracking what’s happening in the tablet world – there’s a lot of great innovation happening there in both hardware and software which I find fascinating.

And, being a seasoned tech blogger, I want to write about it!

Obviously, as a predominately home server-focused site, We Got Served is not the place to focus on tablets and mobile devices. I know readers come here for a specific set of topics, and that’s what we’ll continue to focus on. So today, I’m launching a brand new sister site to WGS, which will focus on a specific mobile platform.

Next week, HP launch their new WebOS tablet, the HP TouchPad, which looks like a great competitor to the iPad (I’m an iPad owner and I think it’s brilliant, by the way). I won’t bore you with the reasons why here at WGS, but if you’re interested in WebOS, the HP TouchPad or tablets in general, then it’s definitely a place you should check out.

It’s called TouchPad Talk, and my dream is to create a community that follows the same path as WGS – the same type of content, the same overall tone, the same awesome involvement from readers and the community. News, reviews, help and how tos. Just focused on a different platform, and via a different URL to keep things clean.

I’ve literally just taken the wraps off the site in the last hour so there’s no-one there – if you’re interested in checking it out (and maybe have a sneak preview into how the design of WGS may evolve later in the year), then please go ahead and visit, comment, register, get involved, spread the word at http://www.touchpadtalk.com – here’s a few pics of the site in action.

To reassure anyone that needs it, there’s no impact on We Got Served – things here will continue as before, and in fact I’m working on something pretty cool for WGS which I’ll hope to reveal in the next few weeks. Opening up TouchPad Talk just allows me to talk about something different over there (which is refreshing for me having focused solely on home servers for four years, without creating a huge amount of off-topic content over here.

Starting a new community is a pretty lonely experience – I remember the first few weeks of WGS where there were zero visitors, and it’s pretty disheartening! So, please excuse the plug, but I’m hopeful that a few of you may be interested in getting involved with TouchPad Talk too – as a reader, writer, moderator or whatever. If you have any feedback, or you’d like to contribute, then feel free to drop me a line (there or here!) and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Right… apologies for the interruption to your usual service. We’ll take you back to your regular programming.

eeeh seems a little specific, why so much WebOS/HP focus, the tablet/mobile market is huge and the focus is on an as yet non existent segment?

Four years ago, you could have asked the same question about WGS and home servers being a non-existent segment! :-)

To be honest, I don't think the world needs another general purpose tablet/mobile site and running one alongside WGS would be unmanageable. To build successful communities, you have to a. niche well and b. get in early and c. hope the platform you focus on takes off.

The TouchPad looks like a great platform, and I'm hopeful that TouchPad Talk hits the mark – but we'll see!

Fair points, personally I see all the major OS's having more potential, even more than iPads iOS. Hopefully hp comes closer to realizing this potential so they can have a launch a little better than the Galaxy Tabs and Playbook.

Anyway best of luck with the new site!

Thanks! To date, I've not been a fan of the Android tablet releases, and webOS certainly looks like a more polished OS for tablets – that said, I'm sure it'll need ongoing development to try to make up any ground on Apple. Windows 8 will be interesting too – such a radical UI shift is a bold move. I'm sure Microsoft can't wait to get it out of the door…

I'm not too hot on android in general, it feels like a less polished clunky Windows Mobile, that being said the UI is a lot better. This is why I'm still hopeful for the playbook, they've seen where android have gone wrong and corrected it – just needs more time in the oven for first and third party apps to appear.

WebOS didn't seem to take off here so I've not been keeping tabs on it but it seems to be liked by most and with your new site I'll be sure to check it out.

Windows 8 looks great but I thinks it's too early to tell how it will go, its one to watch.

Thanks Terry. I've owned and used a Palm Pre since they were launched, and I absolutely love the multi-tasking ability of WebOs, among so-many of the other features that were later adopted by other smart phone OS's. I hope HP does a better job of letting consumers know the the convenience and ease of use of WebOs products.

      Hey Marco,

Well, if they fail to do so, they'll have blown a lot of cash buying Palm, that's for sure.

    Well that ended badly…
It's getting to be a recurring theme with HP – first the WHS's now WebOS
