The Media Center Project for Windows Phone 7

For the SmartPhone crowd that wants to do everything from their phone, Brad Mauk has developed a Windows Phone 7 app that works as a remote control for Windows Media Center.  This Project consists of a WP7 app and a Windows Media Center add-in.  The phone app is available from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace and the Media Center Remote Command Listener software is available here.

The app is currently at v2.5 and the WMC program  version is currently at 3.7.

Of course, the question you have is what exactly can The Media Center Project for Windows Phone 7 do for you?

From Brad:

The Media Center Project is an endeavour to simplify development and remote interaction with Windows Media Center computers and Extenders.

This interaction is done through the Media Center Remote Command Listener software. This software allows client devices to connect to Media Center to retrieve information, and provides the ability receive commands to control Media Center functionality.

The Media Center Remote app along with the corresponding Media Center Remote Command Listener can control your Windows Media Center computer and Extenders over the WiFi in your house. You can browse your Music, Picture, and Video libraries on your phone. Search for songs, artists, and albums to Play or Queue, or browse your collections as well as playlists to play on your Media Center. You can also use your phone to Play pictures and videos.

The WP7 app also provides the ability to control basic functions like Play, Stop, Previous, and Next, along with Volume and Channel control. You can control the interface from your phone using directional buttons or a gesture pad to ‘swipe’ through the menus. There is also remote keyboard functionality.

Brad is also working on a Kinect App which sounds quite interesting:

The Kinect for Media Center project is in its early design phase. Functionality will include being able to control the Media Center interface with hang gestures and possibly voice interaction. I’ll make updates as the project progresses.

What follows are some pictures of what the Media Center Remote app looks like on a Windows Phone 7.

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.
