Windows Home Server 2011 Online Evaluation Now Available

According to Microsoft’s Windows Home Server blog, the company have just launched a new online evaluation experience for the latest version of the platform, Windows Home Server 2011.

This virtualised environment replicated the full WHS 2011 server and client experience allowing free interaction with both components, or showing off key features with a guided tour, if preferred. The online evaluation replaces the provision of a trial download for Windows Home Server 2011 – according to the company, the inclusion of third-party codecs in the platform prevents distribution of a limited trial version of the product.

Who's gonna be the first to comment?? I'm speechless at this point. How is this supposed to help??

Well, to be fair, they do say that they can't provide a downloadable trial because of licensing restrictions on codecs, but I agree that an online evaluation is no substitute for those of us who want to kick the tyres.

Clearly, they didn't think it worthwhile to just strip out the codecs to make a downloadable version. Once again, are they really aiming to engage with the community?

Why the couldnt have these codecs installed after the os installation is a mystery. Just another hurdle for everyone to jump. When will users realize MS have no regard for the real world.

Awesome, they still do not have drive extender. That rules , i love spanning all my stuff over various drive letter rather than a single shared pool,,,NOT,,, WHS 2011 is a fail, Thanks Microsuck

So you're making people hungry, but not tell them when it's feeding time or what it's going to cost. Great marketing (not).

What a useless lab, whats the point?
instead of focusing on a lab they should fix the overall product itself

Get over yourselves. Have been running the RTM since it was released and, after a few days of experiencing the performance benefits, you won't miss DE. If you purchased a license for WHS v1 prior to WHS 2011 release and found it worthwhile, then you're sure to find WHS 2011 of equal value, if not greater. However I do realize that it was a nice to have OEM solutions like the HP Mediasmart. Personally, I ran my HP EX485 into the ground, quickly outgrowing the limited hardware. Made the decision to build a home-grown WHS2011 vs. wait for an OEM option a simple one.

Ijust dont understand how are they going to get users to invest on a software that is not different than Win7? I gave up on WHS and now i use Win7.

Is this OS actually going to release or will it become a myth like Duke Nukem did?

  • Allan

I can't believe this. What's the point of making a online evaluation available to the wider community if you can't actually buy WHS 2011?

  • paul

The WHS trial option was much better. A download that you could then simply purchase. In the meantime my test rig sits gathering dust until i can purchase an OEM copy to install on it
