LG Smart TV & Media Link – Hands On

Back in August last year we brought you the first glimpse of LG’s new Smart TV platform (then branded as NetCast), with an integrated media streaming application powered by Plex. Fast forward five months, and a refined version of the platform was on show last week at CES 2011 in Las Vegas.

Windows Home Server is a No Show at CES

With excitement generated for new media streaming, file sharing and storage solutions here at CES this week, Microsoft’s Windows Home Server “Vail” was conspicuous by its absence, other than news of a Windows Phone 7 app that has been developed for the platform.

Haier Windows Embedded Connected TV – Hands On

Whilst Microsoft were demonstrating their new Windows Embedded Standard 7 media devices in private this week at CES, Haier had their prototype Windows Embedded Connected TV on show at their booth. At this point, no information is available on release dates, territories and pricing and from first looks it definitely appeared that there’s more development work required to get Windows running on the TV hardware with the kind of stability you need from a CE device.

Microsoft Showcases New Windows Embedded Media Center Devices at CES

Whilst Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave them ne’er a mention during his CES keynote this week, the company are demoing a range of new Windows Embedded Standard 7-powered media devices here at the show. Concept products from a wide range of manufacturers including Haier, Reycom, Prime Time, Acer Gateway and Evolve are on show with Microsoft demostrating media integration scenarios between Windows Media Center, Windows Home Server and Windows Phone 7.

Windows Home Server “Vail” Preview Expires 10th January 2011

Microsoft have announced that the current build of Windows Home Server “Vail” Preview will expire on 10th January 2011. The company have stated that there will not be a patch to extend the life of the build, forcing testers to migrate data off their test machines.

Syabas Announces Partnership With Intel to Bring the Atom CE4100 to Future Products

Syabas, the manufacturer of the Popcorn Hour and Popbox digital media jukeboxes today announced a strategic partnership with Intel to introduce the Atom CE4100 processor to future products. The Atom CE4100 is the same chip that powers the competing Boxee Box and TV solutions from D-Link, Iomega and Viewsonic.

Viewsonic Boxee TV – Hands On

Earlier this week Viewsonic and Boxee announced a partnership to bring the Boxee media platform directly to the TV, no set top box required. We headed over to the show floor today to get hands on with the product and talked to representatives from both Boxee and Viewsonic on what we can expect from the collaboration later in the year.
