WGS Reader Offer: Get Up to 15% Cashback On the HP Data Vault X510

Just before we finish up for Christmas, it’s time for another great WGS Reader Offer! We’ve teamed up with the HP StorageWorks team in Europe who have agreed to offer a great home server cashback deal for WGS readers. If you live in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden or Switzerland and you’re looking for a new home server, then read on!

The recent announcement by HP to discontinue its Windows Home Server products, coupled with Microsoft’s decision to remove Drive Extender from the next-generation Windows Home Server Vail and Small Business Server Aurora platforms, is a double-edged sword for most readers.

On the one hand, it’s created a period of uncertainty as we wait to see what Microsoft will actually deliver in the next generation of WHS. This, in turn, will go a long way to determine the reaction of companies like HP as they plan their next move in the NAS market.

But for now, these developments have created a somewhat curious situation whereby the older, first-generation Window Home Server models, which support Drive Extender, may well be more desirable to home and small business users – certainly I’ve read a lot of comments from users over the last few weeks who are going to stick with WHS v1 in the medium term. Couple that with the likes of HP selling through their remaining stock at a discount and Vail’s biggest competitor may well be its predecessor.

As we revealed back in April, HP upgraded the X510 Data Vault’s warranty & support from one year to a full three years. Both of HP’s other home server series (the HP Mediasmart Server EX490 and X300 Data Vault) only offer a single year. In talks with HP over the last few weeks, they’ve assured me that anyone purchasing a home server now will still receive their full warranty and support entitlement even though the product is being discontinued.

So, here’s the deal: HP is offering WGS Readers up to 15% cashback on the purchase price of a new X510 Data Vault between now and February 28th 2011.

To take advantage of the offer, purchase a new system, keep hold of your receipt and visit http://h41201.www4.hp.com/AdLanding/4651/?ocugid=4651 - follow the instructions on where to send your proof of purchase details.  The rebate will be paid directly to you.

Check out our Hands On review of the X510 for our verdict on the product.

Update: The HP website currently states the offer ends on December 31st 2010, but I’ve just had confirmation from HP that the offer will actually be valid until February 28th 2011.

According to the HP website you have to buy the X510 before the end of December, not January:

"You purchase one of the applicable HP StorageWorks X510 Data Vault products before 31.12.2010"

Yep, I know – I've let HP know the site is currently incorrect. Funnily enough, I think they've all gone home for Xmas. I'm sure they'll change it in the coming days, but we agreed the offer would go until the end of Jan.

    Hmmmm.
Here's another HP goody to consider:
If you buy one of their ProLiant MicroServers – http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/sm/WF02a/153
Hp will give you £100 cashback – http://h41112.www4.hp.com/promo/proliantmicroserv
Misco have them on offer for about £219 – http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/i
Which gives you the hardware for less than £120. Okay you need to supply the OS, but as an upgrade path for an existing but aging WHS V1 install, it looks a good deal.
Obviously, not a "plug-in-and-go" solution, but worth thinking about – the specs show it has an onboard VGA, so you can try out whatever passes for the next Vail beta, before deciding to stick with V1 ;)

According to the web site the rebate offer is good for kicj purchased up to end of Jan 1011

Also the extended warranty is not supported here in Australia. HP only offer the 1 year warranty as standard and if you need extra you will have to purchase a support pack to extend your warranty to 3 years. Also the extended warranty is not supported here in Australia. Unless the person I talked to on the phone had no idea (which is likely) do you have further information which I can prove to HP Australia this is the case.

Check they're not getting confused with the X310 – that model does have a 1 year warranty, whilst the X510 is definitely three. At least in Europe and the US, it is.

Hi. There does not seem to be an option for Ireland :( I rushed to buy this when I saw the rebate offer here but now it looks like I cannot get the rebate.
Any chance you can pressure them for me?

Well, I bought from DABS – a "HP Global Partner supplier" here in the UK, and HP are refusing to acknowledge that the Invoice that DABS supply is valid, as it shows DABS own stock ref number and not the #ABU model number. (It also says it is an HP X510 but they seem to think I may have bought a grey import or something from one of thier own partners!) I've supplied a photo of the label under the server that has the serial number and #ABU, and a copy of the webpage showing the DABS ref crossreferences as being the correct model number, but I just got another email from HP saying I haven't supplied proof on an invoice. So it appears that HP's own partner supplier invoices are not accepted by HP. I'm all out of ways I can think of to comply with the criteria. It appears I'm not getting my refund. Not amused.

Update to my post above. I called them and it's all sorted out. They seem to be swamped with emails that they have not got around to processing yet, meantime they are sending reminders that could be read that they have read and rejected submissions.

If anyone else is in the same boat I'd call them.
