Hands On: The Boxee Box

Introduction

The Box( ee ).  You will either love it or hate it.  Looks-wise that is. It is quite small.

It is very quiet.  And it promises to be your Internet (and LAN) portal for all things media on your television.

Is this the replacement for my cable box?  Or simply an expansion of media possibilities?  Is it as good as (or better than) my HTPC or not?

Perhaps the better question is: would my wife replace her cable DVR with the Boxee?

Unboxing the Boxee Box

You can see the full unboxing here, if so desired.  To repeat a bit of that post here, we have the physical box.

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I returned mine without even opening it. Too many bad reviews on Amazon. No netflix or Hulu. I'll wait. Probably will be $50 cheaper anyways….

Cute, but that is not why I would buy something like this. Also you are totally limited to what they offer, as there is no getting in and upgrading/updating (BIG negative for me as I like to tinker over time). And another BIG no is Linux (really, what is the point people?? Being free is its only advantage). I would have to pass on this.

for me the no tinkering , it just works is a big bonus. coming to play a movie etc but finding you have to add this codec or tweak that software is such an arse ( i spent to many years doing it and have found there are much more fun ways to spend time).

Its just a shame it hasnt lived up to the prospects , too delayed and too limited currently.

Needs XBMC on it badly, (Boxee is an XBMC trunk)… I was waiting for that as Avner said it would be possible, but looks like its not going to happen if at all for a while yet.

Gave up waiting and bought an ION based Zotac ZBOX!

Is it a good pure media player (streaming from WHS) or are there better alternatives currently? I don't need any DVR or Internet capabilities.

Robert – take a look at XBMC, its more orientated at your local content than Boxee is.
