Aurora to be Released 1H 2011 As Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

Microsoft today announced more details on the forthcoming release of Windows Server “Aurora”, including final product naming and and update on launch timings.

From today, Aurora will be known as Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and is set to be released in the first half of 2011. Pricing will be announced as the product gets nearer to RTM.

In a blog post revealing the plans, Manlio Vecchiet, Director for Windows Server Product Management announced:

Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (formally Windows Small Business Server Code Name “Aurora”) is ideal as a first server for small businesses, providing a cost-effective and easy-to-use solution to help protect data, organize and access business information from virtually anywhere, support the applications needed to run a business, and quickly connect to online services such as Office 365, hosted e-mail, collaboration and CRM. Windows SBS 2011 Essentials can be used by up to 25 users and requires no CALs for user access. While pricing will be released closer to RTM, we intend to deliver an affordable entry level pricing to meet the needs and budget of small businesses. Windows SBS 2011 Essentials will be available through all current Microsoft server licensing channels and is expected to release in H1 2011.

Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials’ big brother, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard, is expected to be released in December 2010.

Microsoft are yet to announce the final name of the forthcoming Windows Home Server “Vail” release, but your guess is…..?

My money is that the name for Vail will be Windows Home Server 2011.

Microsoft is pretty much unable to release a product with the Windows branding.

Personally, I like the code names. I wish they could call the products Vail Home Server and Aurora Small Business Server.

I just want my copy already … I really don't care what it's called as long as my WHS v2 bugs go away.

Which HW Server Platform will run the VAIL release?

    • http://www.wegotserved.com Terry Walsh

Any x64 server platform that meets the minimum hardware specifications will be able to run Vail. Take a look at the beta at http://connect.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver and you'll find documentation on what hardware is required.

Cynically lets say ‘Windows Home Server 5’ as a vague reference to WHS Quattro which will make as much branding sense to consumers as XP to Vista to Windows 7. And with 2010 slipping by and the holiday season upon us with no RTM in sight lets hope it’s not destined to be WHS Vaporware!
