HP ProLiant MicroServer Hints At What’s to Come for Windows Server Aurora

HP today announced a swathe of new small business products, and top of the list is the new HP ProLiant MicroServer, a $329/£220 4-bay budget server designed for businesses of 1-10 employees. Whilst this model is designed with Windows Server 2008 R2 or Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux 5 in mind (at least they’re the configuration options available from HP), it doesn’t take a great leap of imagination to see the MicroServer offering a great solution for the upcoming Windows Server Aurora.

The MicroServer is powered by AMD’s Athlon Neo II N36L processor, running at 1.3GHz. 1 GB of PC3-10600E DDR3 RAM is supplied, although the server can support up to 8GB Unbuffered ECC RAM across its two memory slots. The onboard SATA controller supports RAID 0 and 1 only (no RAID 5/6 options), and a single Gigabit LAN port is available for networking. Additional options include a DVD drive and remote access card for remote management if required, and you’ll also need to spec your own storage to fill the four drive bays, which are accessible behind the MicroServer’s front grill, but are not hot-swappable.

Additional connectivity is provided via seven USB 2.0 ports (four front and three at the rear) plus a rear eSATA connector. As you’d expect from a budget server, warranty is limited to 1 year, and you’ll also have to spec your operating system of choice. Certainly you can see Windows Server Aurora being offered as an option on this, or something similar, when its released.

"AMD’s Athlon Neo II N36L processor, running at 1.3MHz" :D

Well, it is a budget server. :-) Fixed the typo, thanks!

Looks like my home server. I want to see the inside.

I've just got mine, but can't install VAIL due to the processor being 1.3 rather than 1.4
More investigation will be required to hack around, hopefully they will fix that requirement as this chip is dual core

    • PLB

You can install VAIL by creating an unattended file that will bypass the hardware check.

OK, call me an elephant, but it is not because of my enormous trunk…(sorry ladies, I couldn't resist the temptation … B) ), but because of my very long memory , specifically about EX47x server. It uses so much proprietary parts, that if it breaks (power supply, motherboard), I am going to be completely SOL.
So, no thank you HP. I'd rather spend my money on something that will give me an option to fix a component.
Oh… and all the HP nasty stubbornness in refusing to support their printer and scanner in Vista and Windows 7, which I bought not so long ago, leave a test of …. you get the picture, I hope.

Also, this processor has no juice to do any media transcoding, which will be part of Vail. No HDMI output either.

Everybody is talking about saving an environment, but they do NOTHING tangible to support the claim (for example, upgrading a driver and software would be such a thing). I hope that SOMEBODY at HP addresses this issue, before some lawyer figures out that this COULD be a meal ticket to a lucrative law suit….

HP is offering £100 cash back on this micro server (the 250GB version) during Feb 2011 in the UK.
I got hold of one last week and installed WHS v1 on it – it is working fine but HP is not offering drivers for Windows Server 2003 or XP32bit – only for Windows Server 2008 – so I have to hunt for the drivers elsewhere.

Did you find all the drivers? I'm still missing the Display Adapter & SM Bus drivers for Win2003.

  • kais

is this better than the datavault x510, specification wise?
