Fractal Design Unveil 10 Bay Define XL Chassis

Sometimes, you can never have too much storage. Certainly that’s the view of Sweden’s Fractal Design, who this week took the wraps off their latest chassis, the Define XL.

Equipped with a massive 10 hard drive bays, three cooling fans and supporting a range of motherboard form factors including Mini-ITX, Micro ATX, ATX and E-ATX the Define XL may not be the most unobtrusive chassis you’ll find, but Fractal Design have worked hard to bring a little aesthetic flair to their top of the range case.

The Define XL packs those hard drives into a triple chamber which allows the users to select their own thermal profile to minimise heat production. The upper chamber contains most of the components such as the motherboard and one hard drive cage which carries four drives. The second chamber holds the PSU, with a removable lid. The PSU can also be switched around of required to draw air from out of the main chamber. The third chamber holds a further six drives, with an optional 140mm fan at the front.

Damn…… Adding this to my wishlist….

  • phaze

    now this i like… a lot !
I'm just not quit sure where the air extracts to on the lower 6 HDD drive cage… to the side?

Terry…. ummmm… how much does this cost?

  • phaze

OK, found the answear myself regarding the air flow for the bottom chamber, from the datasheet: good stuff!

"The third chamber is the lower HDD chamber, consisting of room for six hard drives.
This chamber is cooled by an optional 140mm fan in the front.
The standard configuration is to let the air that has gone through the HDD’s and
therefore is hot, go out behind the right side panel (seen from the front) and out
in the rear of the case. However, the user can decide to remove the dividing
metal panel between the lower HDD chamber and the PSU chamber, to let the
air flow over the PSU and out in the rear ventilation holes."

    Hello Guys,

The MSRP will be 129 EUR in EUR-zone, which would translate to about 105 GBP incl VAT, and circa 139 USD ex. VAT.

Not bad, I can live with that!

When do you expect availability in Europe? (Italy, to be precise)

    • James Fitzgerald

Is there a list out yet, as to where one can purchase this device in the US?

  • urmaster

This looks like it could make a nice gaming case, are there any front panel connectors?

    • phaze

no disrespect, but aren't 10 HD bays a little over the top for a gaming rig?

      • urmaster

Who says you have to use them all?
Im talking about room, air cooling and a nice simplistic design.

        • phaze

          I can't disagree with that!

We expect it to be stocked in major markets and resellers in Europe around mid October.

Concerning US, it will first be available in canadian reseller NCIX.com in October. US based resellers will follow a bit later, hopefully November.

As for front panel connectors, there is 4x USB 2.0 connectors, 1x e-sata and of course audio I/O. We have decided not to implement USB 3.0 since there's no standard agreed on the internal M/B connector yet for USB 3.0.

    • phaze

Great news, I'll be looking out for this.
THIS will be my case for Vail! (Now all I need is a m/b with at least 8 SATA ports ;-) )

  • Scott

Wow, that is some case!!! It looks like a lot of thought went into the layout design.

  • Outrun

I hope they have a better system for the cable routing holes in this case. My FD Define R3 has useless soft rubber grommets that fall out if I look at the cables let alone touch them. And with all those drives…cable management on the side panel is really bad. Hard to get the side panel on even if you are a neat freak with your cables. I thought the same way as everyone here about the case… in pictures it looks great. But all is not as it seems. The case looks great, don't get me wrong but functionality is just not there. I will say this…with maxed out fan installation…my WHS HDD temps are very very good.

    E for effort…
