Windows Home Server Vail Preview: Shared Folders and Hard Drives Deep Dive

In our Dashboard Deep Dive we took a quick look at the Server Folders and Hard Drives tab.  It is time to take a closer look at what Vail has to offer in these areas.

First, let’s take a quick look at the old vs the new.

The old and tired:

My Windows Home Server v1 Console looks a bit cluttered at the moment.  After all, it is my production machine and my current test bed (not really a good thing) for add-ins.  In the Server Storage tab, other than a overall graphic of the storage system, there really is not much to see or do.

On my system, I add a drive once in a while.  I almost never remove a drive.  And hopefully, I have to repair a drive even less than I have to remove one.  It is nice to take a quick glance now and again to determine when I will need to add another drive.  Other than that, quite boring.

Moving on to the Shared Folders tab, there actually is quite bit of useful information to glean.

It’s particularly useful to see where the space hogs are. Hmm.  It would appear that I really need to delete some duplicate NCIS episodes! Other than options to add and remove folder options, there are a couple of additional useful controls, including Properties and Open. Properties provides some very useful information (when needed) and of course where you can enable folder duplication.

Open brings up Windows Explorer to view/manage the contents of the desired shared folder.

Shared Folders and Hard Drives in Vail

Windows Home Server Vail combines Server Storage and Shared Folders tabs under one top-level tab, which works for me, at least.  You can toggle between the Summary View, which replaces v1’s Storage Pie Chart, a Storage (Hard Drives) tab

and the Folders (Server Folders) tab.

Unlike v1, you can sort the way items are viewed by clicking on the appropriate heading.  The Name view (above) and the Used Space view (below), for example.

As in v1, you have the ability to view folder properties.  Hopefully, you will notice that Client Computer backups are now “just” another folder, albeit without the ability to duplicate.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Thanks for the TON of info on Vail, looks great so far!

Quick question, can you now share two media folders of the same kind to an Xbox. For example, a Personal Videos and Work Videos folder? (At the moment only the Videos folder can be shared). And what about W7 Libraries, can you set up multiple folders to automatically share with a new computer as Libraries from the network (ie a My Documents and a Family Documents share both get added to the Documents Library on a new computer?)

    Cheers!

In the first gen I have to create 2Tb partitions and then add them to the drive pool. Also, I don't have the ability to put the OS on a smaller drive outside of the drive pool. So from the looks of this review, I can put my OS on a small SSD and then present a large array to the home server for the storage? Say like an 8Tb partition and it will use the 8Tb instead of the 2Tb and leaving the rest unusable?

So….. it looks now that the Windows Live Sync aka Foldershare can not be fully installed on Veil without major hassle …. sweeeet!<3

I would like to know if Vail will be able to connect to a NAS box on a windows network, and if it can, could the network share be added to the shared folders pool. I currently use WHS as a Blu-ray media server for MyMovies. While this functions perfectly well for replaying the movies, it is a real chore copying the data on to the server as it’s painfully slow due to the WHS data processing. A gigabit network counts for little. I get playback of a consistent 110 Mbps, but copy to of about 10 to 15 Mbps. With 40Gig files, that takes a while. I’d like to be able to bypass the WHS and store directly on the NAS but still be able to share the data store as a folder on the WHS share.

I would try and find a way to solve your issue because it is certainly not normal speeds; I doubt even if you could redirect a share to a network location that it would solve your issue.

I have a reply to Phil if its any use, i do the same and also have the mediasmart server
I have a 2TB drive connected to the WHS but its NOT added as part of the whole pool just attached, I simply create a shortcut from the files and place the shortcut in to 1 of the shared folders, in my case i have made a foler called MOVIES, and placed the shortcut there
Now when i goto the movies folder and click on the shortcut, it loads the movies from the attced external 2TB drive, thats the easiest and simpliest way i can say , if thats any help

Very nice!! Excluding the System drive from storage pool is a great way to open that drive up to SSD. Very nice.
