New AV Product Coming On Line From Netgear

There is a multitude of articles floating around the Internet today regarding some new products coming out of Networking giant Netgear.  I surfed on over to the Netgear Press Releases area and… saw nothing.  hmm, I thought, what gives?  I emailed my Netgear contacts and I am sure that Microsoft will be happy to learn that other companies have leaks also!  The “official” announcement is (was) supposed to happen next week.  Which products am I referring to?

First, we have new HD media players, the NeoTV 550 (US market) and NeoTV 350 (European market).  Capable of resolutions up to and including 1080p and sound up to and including HD 7.1 Dolby Digital and DTS.

I love the fact that I see more media receivers coming on line, as that can only fuel more competition with resultant lower prices and better products/features over time.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

    So…. this is not a Windows Media Extender… no Windows 7 *.wtv format support….$200 bucks… and made by Netgear…. hmm…. I'll pass.
Too many crappy products ended in my trash can. I'll add $50 and get the real deal from Microsoft – xbox 360 Slim…

Yeah, perhaps it is a bit steep for something with realistically limited functionality compared to other options like the Xbox mentioned above. Although in my opinion, if you're going to do this the right way, then a Home Theater PC (HTPC) is the only way to go, throw in a Windows Home Server and you've got yourself a very sweet setup but with total control of what you do with it. Just doesn't compare to using a console as your Media Center. Just my humble opinion, feel free to check it more out my site. Thanks guys!

Exactly – none of these media streamer products support MCE .dvr-ms or .wtv formats.

That makes them an instant fail in my househould as 80% of video content we watch is Recorded TV (the remaining 20% is dvd/blu-ray, either streamed or watched traditionally from the disk)

I'd love to have these small, low power, and cheap-ish boxes dotted around the house with one monster MCE somewhere serving up the data but as it stands at the moment there's no simple way to do this (barring the neglected DMA2100/2200)

AFAIK these are the only media streamers to support HD audio, this makes them worth a serious look.
