Hands On: My Movies for iTunes Pro

Brian Binnerup’s My Movies application for Windows Media Center and Windows Home Server has provided the framework to catalogue thousands of user’s movie libraries over the past few years. The application helps you maintain and manage your movie collection, whether it’s on DVD or Blu-ray disc or digitally stored on PC or home server, with automatically downloaded metadata and artwork from My Movies’ extensive collection of over 250,000 titles. On Windows Media Center, you can browse through and play your movies, view cast details, and play trailers via remote control in your living room. The Windows Home Server add-in automatically identifies movie folders in your home server’s video libraries, adding high quality meta-data to to the titles which is viewable in a number of Media Center applications. Used in conjunction, they’re a compelling combination for any movie fan.

Of course, everyone needs a mobile app nowadays, and the latest device to be supported in the My Movies family is the iPhone. This week, mobile apps for both Android and iPhone were released in free (limited to 100 movies) and Pro (unlimited) form. Today, we’ll take a look at the iPhone release, and walkthrough how you can manage your movies on the move.

My Movies for iPhone can be used as a standalone app for cataloguing your movie library, or in conjunction with your existing library data stored on Windows Home Server or Windows Media center. Features include:

  • Add titles to your library by barcode or title search
  • Synchronise data between mobile and other My Movies clients
  • Allow friends and family to view your library data online
  • Add titles to different groups (Owned, Wished, Rented)
  • Sort titles by title, year or collection number.
  • Filter titles by type, genre or group.
  • Search your collection by title.
  • View movie details, including synopsis and full cast list.

My Movies for iPhone works best when used in conjunction with My Movies Collection Manager on your PC. My Movies Collection Manager allows you to download and edit the metadata associated with your movie collection, and then synchronise it with an online server. With your collection available online, it can then be viewed using a web browser, and importantly, can then be synchronized with your iPhone.

I'm a big user of My Movies; probably the #1 reason for me to have a WHS. I really like this app, it is laid out very nicely. One thing I would love to add is the ability to edit Meta data within the app (I would constantly tweak stuff during downtime on my phone if I could).

I don't think it was specifically mentioned above, but there is a free version btw. And the free version alone is worth checking out, for viewing your library it is full featured.

One cool feature of the pro version is that you can scan bar codes and add to your library, which I find very interesting (go to Best Buy, browse, add movies to your wish list…), though I have not experimented with it much yet.
