HomeServerSync for Windows Home Server – Backup Beta Begins, Pricing Released

Tranquil PC are seeking beta testers for their forthcoming HomeServerSync for Windows Home Server add-in, which offers online backup, folder sync and remote VPN access to your home server.

In an update, the company said,

Tranquil are pleased to confirm that the HomeServerSync Suite of products is now almost out of beta. The VPN / Sync modules are still in beta, and are working well – with just a few issues being resolved.

We have had approx 26.5TB transferred through the VPN tunnels, with over 1800 PCs connected.

VPN Beta users have enjoyed unlimited fast remote access to the WHS console / WHS RDC / WHS Shares / WHS backups etc along with RDC / folder access to all PCs  on their private VPNs – many want it forever, and are relying on the VPN for daily use !

The Sync tool is very flexible is use, and although designed for PC <> WHS synchronisation has been used for WHS <> WHS synchronisation too (ie mirroring WHS data folders) – not officially supported, but possible.

Today the HomeServerSync Offsite backup WHS Add In goes to final beta.  This module provides off site backup for the WHS device -  and the central management console for VPNs and PC / WHS Syncs.  The beta (not including the VPN / Sync components) is available now for BETA users.

Any interested beta testers should simply drop a line to  hssbeta5@homeserversync.co.uk they will get a download link and simple instructions, shortly after sending the email.  With an offer to enjoy a discount on the final released product, as a token of our appreciation.

HomeServerSync will be released this month at £139 (inc VAT) per year, for 100GB storage with a pre-order discount available at £92 (inc VAT).

My thoughts are that it's expensive. Currently I'm using Crashplan to backup > 2TB of data for less money then their 100GB plan. Granted, I'm doing this via an unsupported method because Crashplan does not have an Add-in. Nevertheless, my data is safely backed up offsite and easily recoverable.

I Would be interested in a supported WHS <> WHS back meathod however.

Personally I like it – its easy to use and works pretty much out of the box.

This sounds like a very expensive "plan" priced for the commercial customer. That would make it not practical for most Windows HOME Server users. Perhaps a few SMBs that use WHS could find this application economically feasible

IMO all of these online backup services are worthless for the typical home user.

    - the transfer is slow and uses up valuable bandwith (transfer caps)
    - data privacy is not guaranteed (no matter what they say)
    - its just too expensive

I can buy a 2TB disk for ~$110, backup over home GB ethernet, locally attached, or internet, using the builtin backup or any sync software. I can carry it with me for instant access, store it somewhere safe and not have to pay. The only thing I lose is realtime backup. For me (and vast majority of users) the set of data that needs to be backed up instantly is not that big – e.g. My Documents. And for that I use a service such as Dropbox, Live Mesh, Mozy (there are many).

The feature-set sounds great – the price is too high for me personally though.

I try to replicate as much data as is reasonable between clients in "realtime" (LiveMesh) and a nightly off-site backup is important to me, just in-case :-)
