First Shoots of Windows Home Server Vail Add-ins Emerge

It may be early days in the Vail Preview, but four celebrated add-in developers have already started work porting their add-ins over to the new platform. As outlined in our Vail Add-ins and SDK Deep Dive, WHS v1 add-ins are not compatible with Vail, and therefore we’ll be starting again with a clean slate – which, given the variable quality of the add-ins developed over the last three years, is no bad thing.

We may not see Windows Media Center & Windows Home Server delivered on the same box in the short term but Microsoft have been busy developing a new strategy to bundle the application directly on to connected devices such as Set Top Boxes and TVs, through its integration into Windows Embedded Standard 7. Is the next generation of Extenders on the way? Or will Microsoft’s excellent Media Center interface power our future connected TVs, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes?
