HP MediaSmart Server/Data Vault Update 3.3 Released

HP this week released another update for their MediaSmart Server and Data Vault models. Version 3.3 includes a fix to improve the quality of transcoded audio files, an issue seemingly introduced in the last update as explained by Alex Kuretz.

The update is available now via the Windows Home Server Console. Simply head to the Settings tab, select MediaSmart Server (or Data Vault depending on your model), then find the HP Update tab and select Check for Updates.

Incidentally, with a lot of issues hanging around Twonky on the MediaSmart Server, a few weeks ago I took the decision to uninstall TwonkyMedia Server from my home server. I’m not recommending this as a course of action for everyone, as you will need to do a full server recovery if you ever want it back on your home server. Bear in mind doing this also breaks HP’s own Web Streaming application through the browser and iStream app. But I’m finding Windows Home Server’s own uPnP media server is good enough for streaming my content to my Media Center, and the Squeezeboxes around the home use their own add-in so all is good. For remote streaming from the home server, I’m using the latest version of Orb Live on the iPhone which is a pretty simple installation, and works really well indeed.

Terry, did you install Orb directly onto the mediasmart or a secondary PC?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tezzer Terry Walsh

Directly on to the MediaSmart Server

any word on a 3.4 that would address the high cpu utilization?

    • Ryan

I went through my files that Twonky was using and found one folder it was hanging on. You can see which folder it is in the Media Server tab. I removed that folder and my CPU usage dropped down to 2-8%.

on Stock Processor or upgraded ?

        • Ryan

          Stock Processor

I had the same experience. Twonky was hanging on one video file and after removing the file from the server and then having it reindex all the media files it went through without a problem and the CPU came down significantly on a stock processor. About the only step that has actually gone smoothly with this entire upgrade.

I would love to see an article on replacing all the hp software with software that actually does the things hp said the server would be capable of. Orb or webguide for streaming, gallery server pro or jalbum for photos (or anything similar to the original webshare), etc..

I don't know how they would be combined into one interface or if they could be, but if anyone could pull it off it would be Terry or some of the others associated with this site.

I couldn't get decent streaming with the original software so after reading a write up on this site I bought and installed Playon (great software). Why not go ahead and replace all the defunct software. Video Converter doesn't work on a lot of the upgraded CPUs so that is turned off. I'm reading about the high cpu problem mentioned in the post above. HP Photo publisher doesn't have a lot of the features I liked in Webshare. The only things I use the default software for regularly now are server backup (built into Win 7 now isn't it?) and remote access for which I'm positive there are at least a dozen alternatives.

If anyone has went this route I'd love to hear about it, by reply or PM.

      I'm running the ex470 w/ 2 GB RAM and LE-1640 CPU btw.

I've been running GalleryServerPro (installed via the Microsoft web platform installer) and deleted the 2 HP picture sites in IIS admin (standard 470 w 2G RAM). So far no issues.

Ahhh so i just got my disc and started the recover but it would not work unless i unplugged all 4 USB external drives before the paper clip thing … Now it is rebuilding server .. am i going to lose everything on those USB drives or whne i plug them back in it will be fine ?

So what's the current server ver of Twonky? My v3 updated EX470, with the 2 patches released this month, still shows v5.1.1 – I thought it should be v5.1.2 ??? RDP to server, run IE, goto http://servername:9000/config

How do i know if my server is messed up or just caught in a twonky loop .. it is pulsing blue , i cant set up connector software because it tells "Unknown network error" .. can i cant get to any of my saved folders ..

This is not the Twonky issue, the issue with Twonky is that after it boots the Twonkymediaserver.exe will hit 100% and get stuck trying to index a file.
I had this issue and called HP about it and they walked me through how to fix it.
Their is a great article http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/03/04/how-to…

Ahhhh I quit and put my old 500Gb ver 1 drive back in … I had nothing but issues all night .. using Win 7 64X (all i have in the house , 4 of them) .. i could do the restore on a brand new 2TB drive … but when it got to the connector part nothing but issues and finally all my drives were flashing blue and i could not see any media folders , when i opened folders it was empty (i have 8 TB of stuff backed up, it should have been there) and the console would not open just a blue screen… did i need to wait for hours or something ? i am not sure what the heck happened .. i feel like a loser : )

At this point in time I am about ready to go back to the previous version of the HP software. This has turned into a waste of my time. How could this have been released.

    • Jon

Yeah i gave up after pissing my wife off all night and just went back , Luckily i just stuck my old drive in because i was trying to replace it with a new 2 TB .. oh well .. Thanks HP ~

    Hello Terry,

I found your site and was trying to get my HP EX470 working after leaving it sit off for over 7 months. We moved on to Acronis True Image and a full Kaseya solution that was really strong. I moved my HP EX470 to the house and I am trying to use this gadget to act as a local NAS for my home office, plan to push Acronis Images to the unit from agent on all workstations at house and my laptop when I am around the house. All that said…do you know a way to manage this critter without having the Home Media Software loaded?

I saw a gent mention servername:9000/config but I tried that and it did not work?

Any idea's on how I can get this thing to work without riping office apart to look for CD?

    Thanks in advance,
    Roger
