Tranquil PC Announce the SQA-SuperStor

UK home server specialist Tranquil PC today announced the availability of the SQA-SuperStor, an updated version of their SQA-5H server with three eSATA ports, allowing the external connection of multi-drive enclosures for high capacity storage. When coupled with Tranquil PC’s own SQA-EX drive enclosure (or a compatible third party brand), you could create a 20 drive home server with up to 40TB of storage.

SQA SuperStor Series2 sub Tranquil PC Announce the SQA SuperStor

The SQA-SuperStor comes as standard with 2GB RAM (expandable to 4GB) and a single WD Green Power 1TB drive (leaving four internal drive bays clear for expansion). A dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor powers the home server, running at 1.66GHz.

Those extra eSATA ports come at quite a price, however. The standard SQA-5H-2000, which offers a similar hardware spec, but just one eSATA port, is currently priced at £469 ex VAT. The new SQA-SuperStor is currently listed at £559 ex VAT, and that’s including a £40 introductory saving.

I have had my Sqa since 08- no issues for me except I am close to using up all my 5x 2TB storage..excited to read more about this SuperStor..

*Seems silly to me that such a g8t pce of kit can end up in the bin when there is 3yr warranty RTB – WHAT A WASTE!

I just throw in the garbage can my old SQA-5H, it's not reliable storage device for longer periods.
In my case was sata controller and lot of other smaller problems.

I've had issues as well with the SQA-5H SATA card and power (rush power and power supply). Worked out after shipping the unit back. Took a few weeks though.
This new thing seems like just another eSATA card they found. Wouldn't know if that's worth an additional £90 (+ £40). Seems like a very expensive card.
Would the little ATOM chip be up to 20TB? If I see how much time the chip now uses "searchindexer-ing" and "demigrator-ing"….

I am using one of the early SQA-5H 's (full of 2TB disks) and have an additional storage set (SQA-Ex) running for years without a hitch. At some point I got hot disks and Tranquil send a better fan for free and that fixed the problem.
IT's a very slow system but saves a lot of power. I can only say that Tranquil service was very good and the quality of build an reliability also very good. My systems run 24/7 and get a lot of workoad but keep me happy. If needed I will buy again altough I don't think two SATA ports are really necesairy.

The SQA-5H is cute but not that well thought. Tranquil is in UK where the weather is cool most of the year, so, the unit has some serious cooling issue and bakes all its internal components with time.
I live in Singapore where we the temperature is 30C (86 F) degrees all year long and I had to mod it quite a bit to bring the drives into the minimal operating temperature range(when the aircon is off), to have the DC-DC internal PSU fail. The biggest problem is that they use the drive bay has heat sink and works ok if you only have up to 4 drives, the 5th will choke the air flow too much and the box becomes a easy bake oven. I ended up harvesting the healty components into a server case and everthing is now stable. I wouldn't buy it again.

I've had issues with my SQA-5H; the front panel BACKUP button does not work with WHS PP3. Has anyone figured out a way to get it working again? I've been waiting forever on their Support, they have ignored my requests for help.

    • neil

hi, did you manage to get the front panel drivers?

      • WHS-Newbie

I requested it several times via the Support help web site, and No they were never able to help me. They simply never looked into it from what I can see. I even offered to help them, it's unfortunate that the support for Tranquil is not any better. Truly regreatable. I did notice that they now have a small print item stating that the backup button only works with WHS version PP1 and not with PP3. Everyone should be on PP3 of WHS, so my understanding is that they will never fix the drivers that exisit…and those do not work.

It's been 3 weeks and I own a brick. This box arrived from the factory bluescreening – restore image using their software – blue screen – technical support seems to be back in 1970s mode. I've worked technical support all my life and if my org ran like this – I'd fire the CEO who would allow just a thing. Do not buy from Tranquil – I've now had to invoke American Express and the UK goverment – waste of time and money

oh yeah – I have an home built SR2500 WHS v1 w/ PP3 since it was released – not one reboot and fully stable…so WHS isn't the problem..unless they can get drivers…
