Hands On: VIA M’SERV S2100 Mini Server

Manufacturer: VIAModel: VIA M’SERV S2100
Price: TBCWeb: VIA

Introduction

This time last year we reviewed VIA’s first mini server, the Artigo A2000 – a barebones, 2 bay solution that we loved for its compact size and ease of assembly, but we had definite concerns over its specification, in particular the 1.5GHz VIA C7-D processor that powered it. The issue with the C7 was that it is an X86 processor, and as such would not be compatible with a 64-bit OS such as the forthcoming Windows Home Server “Vail”.

12 months later, VIA return with the M’SERV S2100 Mini Server – an updated model similar in intent to the original Artigo, but packing the company’s all-new Nano 64-bit processor running at 1.6GHz, 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 2 RAM slots.

The Mini Server has just gone into production but is yet to reach stores – VIA sent us over one of the first units from the factory to check out how it compares to their previous model.

First Looks

The M’SERVE’s chassis is almost identical to the Artigo A2000, with just a red stripe at the front signalling a difference. The chassis itself is roughly the size of a small shoebox – nice and compact for a two drive home server.

    Hi Terry,
If it's not to late, can you post an image of the printed circuit board where the VGA cable plugs in ?

    Thanks.
