“Mini” Hands On: PowerGenix NiZn Rechargeable Batteries

How many devices do you have that require batteries?  How many of those devices do you use rechargeable batteries with?  And the final question: how long do they last?

Actually, perhaps the final question should be “why are we talking batteries on a Windows Home Server website?”  Because I am excited about this particular product!

Why all the questions?  Well, at the beginning of the year, I went to this electronics show in Las Vegas called CES.  At one of the press events, a company called PowerGenix was displaying a NiZn rechargeable battery pack.  They were handing out these chargers (with 4 AA batteries) to those members of the press who stopped by.  As I am loath to passing up freebies, I took one!

Never turn down a “potentially” useful freebie.

Sometimes they don’t even have to be useful, since I snagged a Woot! Screaming Monkey.

If you have to ask, don’t bother…

Anyway, back to PowerGenix.  I made mention of the product in a CES “Odds and Ends” post:

PowerGenix.  Nickel-Zinc rechargeable batteries.  1.6 volts!  Why would I care about these?  The rechargeable batteries that I use in my camera seem to last about…  5 minutes.  They were handing out chargers and battery packs, and I am hoping they will work better than the “other” ones

When I got home, I charged them up and stuck them in my camera.  It is now over 2 months and many many pictures later.  Wanna know how many times I have had to recharge them?  Zero, zippo.  Not once!

The NiMH batteries that I used previously would actually seem to drain (quickly) even during non-usage.  At one point, I even thought I had defective batteries, so I went and got more.  Yes, those batteries were defective, as in defective design.

Anyway, if you are in the market for some new rechargeable batteries, check into some NiZn batteries.

These sucka’s have the Jim Clark Seal of Approval!

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Have never heard of a Nickel-Zinc battery. I have, however, heard of (and many, many times experienced) short charge life and even rapid self-discharge with Ni-cad, Ni-Mh, and even rechargable hybrid alkaline batteries. It is interesting that alkaline batteries that we are familiar with from years ago produce nominal 1.5 volts each. Ni-cad and Ni-Mh have nominal voltage of 1.25 V. Now comes a Ni-Zn with 1.6 volt potential. Should one assume that the Ni-Zn batteries require a "special" charger that will only be used to charge those batteries? Now to the real question. Where does one buy a Ni-Zn battery and charger and are their caveats or special instructions regarding their use?

Yes, they require a special charger, for use only with NiZn batteries.

I am trying to get a hold of some of these in Germany.
I hope this is the solution to the low voltage 'normal' re-chargables.
A lot of devices are built that need the 1.5 volt supply in order to work correctly. I have several telephones that need 4 AAA each and I have tried the 'normal' Ni-Cad & NiMH re-chargables and they just don't last as long as throw aways.
I REALLY REALLY hope that these deliver what they say.
    Keep us posted.

Nice find, bookmarked, will be ordering soon. Thanks Dave.

"Special charger" means a charger that will provide voltage greater than 1.6 volts so that they will charge. My ordinary NiMH "fast charger" puts out 3 volts with no load and charges the NiZn batteries perfectly. I have been using them for over a year without any problems at all.

Crazycameras.co.uk are a scam organisation by all accounts, avoid. Still trying to find a reputable UK based seller for these batteries?
