About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

That's a much prettier device then other HDD docks I've seen, but the other docks have evolved to become far more functional as well. If you are sitting it on your desk, then the ICY Dock is nice, but I think if you are using it on your server, a more functionally flexible dock is useful.

I don't know why anyone with a lot of data would pass over HDD docks. Large hard disks are the only cost effective method for backing up large amounts of information in the consumer space. LTO-4 just isn't priced for mortals.

A word of warning, if you are going to use an eSATA connection, there seems to be varying degrees of ability of eSATA controllers to designate devices as removable/ejectable. I'm not sure if this is a limitation in the docks either. Anyway, a handy tool, should you get a drive dock is HowSwap!:

This will allow you to eject disks that Windows doesn't always think are removable devices. I would be interested to know if the ICY Dock is recognized as a removable device and supported appropriately.

I'm pretty sure it is recognized. I suppose I will have to unpack it (they are a PITA to repackage!) and verify. Gotta work outside for awhile, tho!

The icy dock get 3 out of 5 stars average in user reviews at newegg and the competing blakcx models get 4.5 to 5 stars.

these are US $57 shipped at Newegg (a reputable discount US dealer). But the thermaltake "blacx" sata 2.5/3.5" esata+USB2 for $36 shipped.

IE much better rated makes of models with same capability are cheaper.

Did you get a chance to re-test the dock to see if it was recognized by Windows as a removable device?
