Program Update: Microsoft Security Essentials

I turned on my computer a bit earlier.  A message came up indicating a new version of Microsoft Security Essentials was available.  I opened MSE

and sure enough, the Upgrade now button was there.  A simple click

a few minutes later

and all done.  The new version numbers:

and the official webpage:

I’m sure there is some link to what the changes are, but I sure don’t see it.  Anyway, if you are using MSE, you might as well stop the nag screens by upgrading.  Now!

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I still get the alert on WHS that Spyware is out of date/not working. Wish that would get solved in one of these updates!

My comes up like that and then goes away as quickly as it comes up

If you are experiencing this on Windows 7, you can got to My Computer > right click – Manage > Services > Security and set it to Automatic (Delayed Start). That fixed my problems with my av software not reporting quickly enough. It was really annoying to see my WHS Connector icon turn red (critical) on 6 PCs!

Hmm. I haven't yet been able to get my MSE to pop up and say it needs an update. Still happily green, happily oblivious. Seen it pop up on another PC here at the shop, though. Kinda odd. Maybe because I'm using 7?

      I'm using Win 7 also. Strange…

Open MSE control panel, click the down arrow by the "help" button, select upgrade MSE. I received a notification on my windows 7 machine, but not on any of my XP machines. The same upgrade (with 1961 in the build number) was available for all computers.

Mine showed the update thru Windows Update. Using win 7.

Am I the only one that thinks MS should make MSE available for WHS?

    • JMS

Not, you're not the only one. I would really sign up for that.

    • RedCat

No you are not alone, I think MSE should be available for WHS

On my machine (Win7 x64) the Security Center service is already set to Automatic (Delayed Start). I still get occasional notifications that it's unprotected, usually on resume from Hibernate. Still, not the end of the world, as soon as I close the balloon, it changes to green.

Mine prompted on all the pc here, which is bloody annoying!!

I ticked all the auto buttons, why do we have to manually upgrade the client.
It ought to just install it and pop-up a "You must restart your pc" box or something.

As it is manual only the pc I've been to, to help someone, have been upgraded :/

    So much for auto ;)
