European HP MediaSmart Server Owners Start Receiving v3.0 Update

If you’ve been following our coverage of HP’s MediaSmart Server v3.0 update, you’ll be aware that it’s been a long, drawn out process to get the update developed, tested, released and distributed to owners of the EX470 and EX480 series home servers.

But today, mailboxes around Europe started to be filled with the magic discs that will transform first and second generation MediaSmart Servers with brand new features and user interface. We’ve heard from readers in the UK, Norway and Sweden who were the first to receive theirs earlier in the day, so it looks like wheels are finally turning.

A different story over in the USA & Canada, where readers who have ordered the update are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress on their discs being issued. Those who have called HP Support in the US are being informed that discs will be shipping from 20th March – let’s hope there’s no further delays.

    After all this I'm still inclined to wait and see the response from other users. Then again well over a year in production it should be rock solid.

    I spoke with HP in North America just now – customer service and MediaSmart technical support. They both expect it to ship in the US sometime after March 23.

    I just got off the phone with HP. I had an original delivery date of March 2nd, here in Texas. HP had customer service had me hang up and dial a different number, then transfer me 3 times before I reached anyone that could even find my order number. I spoke with Carl in the MediaSmart technical department. He was very nice but really offered very little in the way of info on where my disc is. He said they are currently out of stock with no ETA on new stock to ship to customers. According to Carl, the original run for all of Europe was only 100 discs. That seems a little far fetched, so I questioned him on it. He finally got around to saying there were some "issues" that had come to light when customers started performing the upgrade. I asked again when I could expect my disc and he said his group has not been provided a date to give customers. He said he was aware of the March 23rd date being mentioned on the internet, but said that is not an official date. Bottom line is neither I nor HP apparently know when I should expect my disc. What a deal…..

      Had the same run around today. After 30 minutes on the phone, MediaSmart Tech guy told me they didn't make enough and orders should start shipping soon. HP dropped the ball on this one. How could you not have enough supply? They knew the community had been waiting for this.

    Yeah, apparently they are ground shipping the disks from Europe to North America.

    Doh! Someone forgot to tell HP you can' t ground ship across the ocean! Prepare for more delays.

    I ordered mine last week a couple days after they became available in the US…. Expected delivery date was listed as March 22nd…. I got an email a couple days after that saying they weren't sure if they could make that date, and they would call me if they didn't think they would make it… Good grief!

    I got my cd´s yesterday and installed the server as WGS have wrote in there guide,
    but after the server was reinstalled (the job took 90 min plus)

    After the server booted up the server cpu got a load of 100%, rebooted the server, same cpu load.

    The server was up and running all night, but same cpu load today.

    Any other with this issue on the EX470?
    (I have 2 GB ram)

      I found the issue, and after disabling the TwonkyMedia the cpu load was back to normal.
      Might help other users.

    I had the "Calculating sizes" problem (a.k.a. "System drive not added") before trying the 3.0 upgrade on my EX470 (2GB) here in Sweden. After performing the Server Recovery I get all sorts of problems – the Backup service does not start, the shares are not recreated… I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with drive letters changing (for the first data partition on the system drive in particular). So now I'm going to offload the data and do a full factory reset. Just a heads up in case someone else is having this problem and is hoping to solve it by upgrading.

      I hope you'll update us on how it goes. A factory reset is what I've planned from the start and is what I will do if my discs ever arrive…

    Ok first problem at the end of the update "home server backup service may not be running, restart windows home server and then run this wizard again. if the problem persist contact your hp locator…."

    So, now my WHS is only in english, and i don't find any solution to change it into french, it's a very bad news for me because i'm not the only one to use it. and HP as not prepared this realy hard i think !

      Entout cas, je veux faire l'upgrade a v3.0. Je continue en anglais: impossible de faire les accents avec ce clavier…

      So, if you have the v3.0 DVD in English, I would like to have it if you are willing to post it.
      This way, you recover your money – naturally I don't expect it for free – you can try and get the French version, and I get the English version without too much stress.

    ordered mine on at 6am on the morning of 23rd Feb (day it came out in UK) from Best2Serve. Still waiting- had an email on the 5th march after contacting them, which they replied my disc had shipped that day (strange that!)- still waiting now….

    Really P***ed off and fed up now- HP have had ample time to put a framework in place to supply this update and it just appears to be totally bodged… really not impressed HP, no not at all!!!

    Got my dics today and what a paid to do the upgrade, still can not install in the connector software. I think the server might be going through all my files and re-directing the links and therefore can not conect, will leave over night and see.

    Got my upgrade disc's yesterday did the upgrade, but the system is so slow now (I have 2gb memory installed) the CPU is at 100% still today! not impressed. video streaming is ok, the console takes ages to load and is unresponsive. also getting a message to update the HP media collector to version 2.5? whats that all about? :(

      Hi,
      I had the same issue. Run remote desktop, kill the process to TwonkyMedia, log out and you can run the Console, and after disabling the TwonkyMedia the cpu load was back to normal.

    Received my discs today in the UK, by Royal Mail judging how it was halfway through the pile of post. In case anyone's interested, they're labelled 'Version 3.0 Upgrade with Patch 1' with 'HP EX470 Series' below.

    For me it seems to be working "ok" so far. After performing step 7 ( http://www.wegotserved.com/2010/02/23/upgrading-t… ) it was stuck on "Preparing Your Home Server" on 2% for a V E R Y long time, at least an hour, thought it was stuck and prepared to fact reset, but suddenly it was finished(!) – so if you see the same better wait a while… Not good to see so little feedback on the progress.
    While stuck, I could RDP onto the server and could clearly see items (folders and files) beeing added to the restored shares, so somewhat hidden at least a progress…
    FYI: my system is a 2GB upgraded stock 470 with a 500GB HDD.
    Added with 2x750GB and 1×1,5TB disks, no shares (I think) on the system drive (500GB).
    Next step to explore and restore the previous settings… Let you know if I find anything out of the ordinary.

    Ok, here is another one with the multilingual problem,…
    When you have a non english language server (my original one is Spanish) and install the server update disks (which came in the english version) the connector won't install, and you'll get some more issues witht folder names, duplicates, etc.
    Hmm I am able to access the console through a remote desktop session and configure it, and also access the files through the the file explorer with \HOMESERVERNAMEfolderfilename…
    Of course, I still do not like the sollution as it is now :-( (

    Just to say that i got my discs yesterday (11/3/10 UK).

    Updated it all without a problem!

    Couldnt get remote access working had to setup my Domain name, so untie and retie it.

    just a little message to tell you i'm going back with the old version, it was more faster and more stable.

    i hope you wil not have the same isue like me, streaming video doesn't work, et the interface of HP MSS now in the console is full of content no so usefull.

    Hi,

    I just spent around 30 minutes on the phone getting passed all around India before I finally reached someone in the Mediasmart server department in Niagara Falls Canada. I was told that a 3rd party vendor is producing and shipping the discs and they have not produced enough. He has not heard of anyone in North America receiving a copy. I asked why hasn’t a single disc shipped in 2 1/2 weeks? He said they had no idea why nothing was shipping, or an exact date it would, but he said he is hearing the 15th. Here is the best part. He said that they do not even have copies in house to test the software! They have no idea how it will work. So even though they support the server they will not be able to answer any questions about the update. He said make sure you have the 2GB of RAM and BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT! Just in case…. GREAT JOB HP!

    Hell all, received mine 4 days ago in Spain.
    Also multilingual problem as described by Carlos above. No warnings about language change (should have read the disk "…update EN".
    Connector uninstalable.
    Server name changed to HPSTORAGE
    Changed user fm administrador to administrator (tks God keeps pass and allows RD)
    Had to find on network manually
    Certificate errorS on connections,various system errors on Server logs.
    Twonky service had to be started manually
    Some shared folders couldn´t be found from he console. Some logs show looking for old routes (folders) in spanish (archivos de programa instead of new setup program files).

    but

    EX470 upgraded to 1 Gb RAM and 500 Gb second disk added, didn´t experience slowdowns, but connector and console not available. Streaming is fine, Content of shared folders still there and some minor firewall issues.

    HP advise not to restore to original software (think i´ve read somewere that might cause data loss).

    Dont really know what to do next but i´ll try to talk with support next week.

    CONCLUSION: Once a couple workarounds have been applied manually looks good but not really sure if i can trust …..DISAPOINTING.

    I have not received my disc set yet despite ordering it virtually as soon as it was anounced
    (before the web site crashed), I have written to HP customer support only to be told to wait 10 days. That is pretty annoying when folk have received theirs 4 days ago and even folk in Spain have had theirs and had time to install it, it looks obvious that mine is lost in the post (I have had trouble with a theiving postman or local sorting office that has now gone on for over a year without the PO doing anything about it!) To have to wait another week and then be put to the back of any queue should HP fail again to meet demand is just typical of the crap HP customer service, especially after waiting so long for firstly for them to offer it and then develop it.

    I have upgraded and all is working fantastic however on the System Status tab the 'Network Utilization' indicator doesn't seem to move at all? The others work fine.

    Hi everyone, I've received my update last week after 2 weeks waiting and I installed it yesterday evening in french. It installed perfectly well although it was a little bit long.

    I have a EX470 boosted to 2Go of RAM and no special lag or slow responsivity it works really well.

    Just got a notification that my disks have shipped. I live in Richmond VA and ordered on the 25th of Febuary. Anyone else in the US ship yet?

    Hi from Vancouver Canada. I got a call from HP in Atlanta saying that my disks would be shipping in April. Right afterwards, however, I checked myself using the very original information on the orginal email from HP confirming my order. THAT page showed that the same time the guy called to say another delay, it in fact SHIPPED via UPS.

    Sadly I'm in Sydney Australia on a project at the moment – according to UPS the disks will arrive Monday 22 March in Vancouver as they're in transit now. It started from California and is oozing it's way through Chicago at the moment.
