Hands On: Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-1B Enclosure

What’s In the Box

Before we get to what is inside, we have the outside.  What can be found below are pictures of the front and rear of the packaging.  As can be seen, normal retail packaging.

Opening up the box, you will find an enclosure, a QIG, and a bag of screws.

A couple of pictures of just the enclosure.

Installation

Installation is something of a 2-part affair.  The first part is to install a 2.5” drive.  Simply slide the top cover in the direction indicated by the arrows (see above), and lift.  Place the drive in the cavity, close the cover and slide back into it’s normal closed position.

The second part is to install it in a HDD bay in your computer.  In my case, I happen to have a single trayless hotswap cage, so instead of opening the machine up, all I need to do remove my 3.5” drive and slide in the MB882SP-1S-1B.  After all, this device is supposed to emulate a 3.5” HDD, right?

Right, perfect fit!  With my setup, this was truly a screwless installation, also!

At that point, I proceeded to install Windows 7 on this setup, which went perfectly.  I could say quickly and silently, but since a significant portion of OS install is reading data off a DVD, let’s just say that I was not wowed by a 2-minute OS install or the normal DVD drive noise.  Not gonna happen…  The main point is that everything, from beginning to end, went smoothly and quickly without a hitch.  And Quick and Silent are the topic of a forthcoming review…  Windows 7 and WHS, oh my!

Costs and Conclusion

The Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-1B 2.5″ to 3.5″ SSD & SATA Hard Drive Converter is not an exciting product.  It is not pretty.  It is designed to perform one function: allow a 2.5” SATA HDD to be installed in a 3.5” HDD bay.  Which it does, easily and securely.  Which is all I need to say.

Pros

  • It does exactly what it is designed to do.
Cons
  • I suppose one could use this to install a laptop drive, but why?  The con, then, is that it requires one to actually purchase a SSD.  Which aren’t going down in cost very quickly…

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

The 'hot-swap' bays on my Corsair Obsidian case have the hard/SSD drives mounted (with screws) to the drive trays – making them not really hot-swappable without a screwdriver. These Icy Docks turned these 'tools required' hot swap bays into truly tool-free bays.
