Hands On: Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-1B Enclosure

I got a pretty little item from FedEx late this week:

SSDimage thumb Hands On: Icy Dock MB882SP 1S 1B Enclosure

What is that, you ask?  A Plextor 128GB 2.5” SSD, the subject of an upcoming review.  Consider that picture an “unboxing” post for the Plextor SSD.  The problem that one runs into if you purchase a drive of this type is how to install it.  At least in desktop machines.

Which is the subject of today’s review item, the Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-1B 2.5″ to 3.5″ SSD & SATA Hard Drive Converter.

Before we take a closer look at the MB882SP-1S-1B, it is appropriate to provide some background information about Icy Dock.  From their website:

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

The 'hot-swap' bays on my Corsair Obsidian case have the hard/SSD drives mounted (with screws) to the drive trays – making them not really hot-swappable without a screwdriver. These Icy Docks turned these 'tools required' hot swap bays into truly tool-free bays.
