They kind of already have that with the E3XXX range and the G3X chipset. Tests have shown they combined only draw <15W idle and sub <40W at full load. So with a couple of low power HDD's you can already get that kind of performance – and its about the same price as the existing Atom boards.

I'm surprised that this platform looks like it won't support WHS#2 (Vail).
Hopefully Intel are cooking-up an ultra low-consumption chipsetCPU combination that will handle both storage duties AND some more Intensive transcoding etc.
Some of the new 32nm Clarkdale CPUs look promising, especially one with the "Turbo-boost" capability of the i5 & i7

A target of <40W with a couple of HDDs would be good!

The only issue that I have seen when looking into this previously is that based on the minimum requirements of a possibly leaked early release of said software, the D410/D510 clock speeds aren't high enough (http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/whshardware...

Obviously until we actually get confirmation of these requirements this all conjecture, however it has possibly left me to postpone a build in the short term. Don't want to be left with something that hasn't a definite upgrade path.

I'm kind of disappointed there's only 4 SATA ports on here, though. eSATA is great, and all, but 6 SATA ports would be ideal.

Well, remember that "home and small business storage" doesn't just = Windows Home Server. The OEMs mentioned in the Intel press release all prefer Linux !

It’s very likely that MS and Intel have been talking. I would be surprised if this new platform isn’t ideal for Vail.

Wow. I was just hours away from pulling the trigger on buying an Atom based motherboard for buying a new WHS machine. Now I’m thinking I should wait.

Are we going to see motherboards based on this new platform for us DIY builders to use for this? Nothing I’ve found so far has what it takes to to it all. Most notably, the eSata ports are missing from almost all Atom D510 mobos available so far. Also, very few of the existing D510 boards have more than 2 internal Sata ports.

I would very much like to see if Intel is going to release a reference board based on this platform like the Mount Olive board.

Impressive power consumption by the looks of things. Will that single core flavour hold up for a WHS build. Would have liked to see more SATA and less USB or even some USB 3.0 instead. I feel the timing for this platform is odd considering MS is right between server iterations.
