What’s the Latest on the HP MediaSmart Server Update?

Welcome to the latest in a now regular series of updates from around the world on HP’s MediaSmart Server 3.0 update. Today’s headlines are that users in the US and Canada have started receiving emails from HP stating that delivery of their update CDs would possibly be delayed, whilst on a brighter note, HP’s European service partners sorted out their problems and ordering re-commenced.

Let’s get into the detail….

North America

We started receiving reports late yesterday that readers who had ordered the update were receiving the following email from HP Support:

Dear Customer:

At HP our products are designed, manufactured and serviced, to meet our high standards.
We apologize for the possible delay in delivery of your service; however, we are diligently working on expediting your order.

Service Order Number xxxxxxxxxxxx
Model # 589796-ZH1
Serial # NSN

We are striving to meet our estimated delivery date; in case where this is not met due to various reasons, an HP representative will attempt to contact you to communicate a new date and/or discuss possible alternative support solutions that could better meet your needs.

Please paste the link below into your browser to get shipment status updates and contact information:

https://warp1.external.hp.com/cso_status/order_lookup.asp

Or contact 1-800-HPINVENT, where we are always ready to serve you.

Please do not reply to this email message, it was sent from an address that is not monitored.

Sincerely,
HP Americas Consumer Support
Date: 3/2/2010

WGS contacted HP to understand the reason behind the delay – they responded as follows:

The CD/DVD replicators that HP contracts out to burn discs on demand and are burning as quickly as they possibly can to fulfil orders. The response has been high and we are greatly appreciative of our install base, want to service them as quickly as possible and will get them their discs as quickly as we can.

Understandably, readers in the US are growing increasingly frustrated by the delays, especially as a distribution date had previously been advised on each order. From the statement above, it appears HP’s partners appear to have now received the software and are now replicating CDs, so it may well be that orders start to be sent out very soon.

Europe

Over here in Europe, we reported yesterday that MediaSmart Server owners were still having trouble ordering their update CDs from HP’s service partner, Best2Serve. The company’s Michel Hendriks, who has helpfully been responding to WGS readers directly on the site over the past couple of days, gave us the following explanation:

“First of all, we’re very sorry for the inconvenience caused to all those that were anxiously awaiting this software upgrade. I would like to assure all of the customers that were able to place an order that their order is safe, and that we’ve just begun processing these orders as the software is now available for production and shipment. I would also like to emphasize that there were no technical problems with our website, the problem was an availability issue. Please know that Best2Serve will do what they can to make sure that everyone gets their upgrades as soon as possible.”

Now that the software is available for distribution, we should expect to see orders starting to be fulfilled in the next few days – those of you in Europe who have placed orders can check their status over at Best2Serve’s website. Michel also sent through a full list of links by country for ordering the EX470 update – here you go:

Please note it looks like only the EX470 series update can be ordered in Europe as the EX480 series was not released over here. If you imported an EX480 series into Europe, you’ll need to find a friend in the USA who can order the update for you.

Finally, the guys from Best2Serve wanted to make a gesture to WGS readers for the inconvenience. The price of the upgrade is low so it was difficult for them to offer any discounts, however, they also sell HP calculators and if you’re in need of one, they’ll happily knock 10% off the price if you use the discount code “wegotserved” at the checkout (Valid until March 14th). You can find the range here. Thanks to Michel for keeping us up to speed with progress over the past couple of days.

One final point to nail – a few readers have asked why CDs are needed in the first place, rather than HP allowing users to download the update. This is apparently due to Microsoft licensing restrictions (I asked the same question to HP a few months ago).

So, that’s all from the HP Update newsdesk this evening – feel free to keep the questions coming!

I can say I don't believe the story HP is telling. I ordered the minute the upgrade was available in the US (2/25 early AM) and it still hasn't shipped. If they really underestimated demand that badly, they really should be ashamed.

  • http://twitter.com/URPREY @URPREY

Also, the fact that they aren't allowing those in other countries who imported a unit to have access to the upgrade discs is a really poor decision.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/urmaster urmaster

Maybe hp should offer me a job, I have no 'business' skills par se but I know what not to do to piss people off. I concur with Bill the unnamed partner has surly printed 1 disc right, why has not a single disc been shipped to those who ordered the moment they were taking?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/ImaDingBat Ima DingBat

I ordered my 3.0 update on February 25th and it has still not shipped, even though HP has sent me an email stating that it will delivered on March 5th. I believe that HP is essentially lying through their corporate teeth regarding this 3.0 upgrade. They already charged my credit card for the new software, but haven;t had the decency to ship the product. That seems a bit fraudulent to me. HP really ought to be able to do better than this fiasco!

  • Joseph Bagadonuts

There is no info on hp.com/support regarding any of this. Why is HP not posting info on its own website, and choosing to use a blog to communicate with its customers?

For example, there's a 3.0 update posted with no instructions or info whatsoever. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

  • Papawolf

Here in Canada I paid $59.62 for the discs on February 25, with no option to select ground delivery, rather, 3-day Fed Ex. So instead of 3-day, I am told it might be delivered on March 16. This follows the 2 months it took HP (2 MONTHS!) to get the Windows 7 upgrade that was promised on a tablet I bought in September 2009(and ordered as soon as they offered pre-order). Whoever handles software updates there should be hit upside the head.

  • rizca

It is shocking. That's all I have to say. My experience with this product and dealing with HP has been horrendous. My EX470 hard disk failed exactly one week after the warranty period ended and that was in January. During the entire time it was in use, I had nothing but trouble with it, mainly incredibly slow response times, probably due to that bad hard disk. I eventually bought two new hard disks and have been waiting for this upgrade for so long that it is not even funny. Argh!

  • Scott

I don't know, I'm just eager to get my update for the last HP product I ever aim to own.

  • http://twitter.com/nicksak @nicksak

And for those of us who have no friends or relatives in the US?

Seriously HP, I don't have any problems whatsoever with paying for an upgrade, nor would international shipping fees have hindered me from purchasing it from the US site, had an international shipping option been available for me. Even the delay – though frustrating – I have been ok with so far.

It is a poor business decision indeed. Making the EX48x upgrade available through your international outlets wouldn't have been that much bother to you, would it? Remember, the people who purchased their units in the US and imported them to Europe did so because they had so much faith in your product that they went through a lot of trouble getting it despite its lack of availability in their region. Those very same people most likely showed off their products to countless of friends and colleagues, so that when the EX49x series became available over here, there was already a demand for the product.

Have you heard of brand loyalty, HP? In the current economy, you need it more than ever. In a world where flashy brands like Apple and Sony are eating into your market share, you can only compete with quality and customer service – and it looks like you are failing us there as well, judging from comments regarding ridiculous shipping costs and failing discs. When people like Scott (one or a few comments up) claims that his Mediasmart server is the last HP product he will ever own, you should take that seriously. Me, I will look elsewhere for my next server/PC product, and as for my 3.0 update I am sure I could obtain it elsewhere as well. Which is really a shame.

Kudos to Terry for keeping us all informed and special thanks to Michel at Best2Serve who updated us all on the whereabouts of the EX47x upgrade discs. HP – for a brief time it was good knowing you, but you have now outstayed your welcome as a guest in my household.

      Hi,
I ordered mine on the 23th and after mailing with best2serve (name is not matching the experience, but any way)

I had the same issue as you Tore, and there response on the mail was:

      ********************************************************************************
We would like to inform you that we will send you the order, unfortunately the driver is not released yet, therefore it is not possible for the logistic partner of HP to ship the order to you.

Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

      Kind regards,

      • Kenneth

        Hi,

Just go a mail from best2serve

        "Dear Kenneth,

We would like to confirm that the ordered driver is now released, the order should be sent within 1- 2 business days now. The shipment can take up to 8 business days.

Again our apologies for the delay and inconvenience.

        Kind regards

        Helpdesk Best2Serve"

    • http://www.best2serve.com Best2Serve

      Hello Tore,

I don't know what your original email said (did you ask to be refunded if this order could not be delivered for instance?) but I can only assume this has been a miscommunication. We cannot un-cancel your order, but since the product is available now you can safely place another order. Sorry for the inconvenience!

      Michel

      • Tore

        Hi Michel,
I only asked why the order was taking so long. I did not ask for a refund. I reordered it and I hope (like everyone here) that it ships soon!

        Thank you!

  • ctewsley

I got a call from HP telling me that my order had been delay from being delivered yesterday (not likely since it hadn't been shipped) to March 17th.

Gives me more time to make sure I get all my important info backed up (again)

  • phil

Also ordered from Best 2Serve uk…

    Order date: 25-Feb-2010 00:38
    Order Staus: Expect Shipment

    Order Shipment: Not yet shipped

"the guys from Best2Serve wanted to make a gesture to WGS readers for the inconvenience. Is there a clue there as to the availability of the discs?
Can customers expect to be inconvenienced up until the 14th March?

    • http://www.best2serve.com Best2Serve

The discs are available right now, so you can order at any time.
Regarding the date of March 14, this date has nothing to do with availability of the upgrade. March 14 is the date until which you will be able to get a 10% discount on HP calculators by using the voucher code "wegotserved".

Why isn't this update a download?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/urmaster urmaster

This has been answered many times. long story short Its is not allowed by Microsoft

Any Details why ? i cant figure it out

  • James

Ordered on 02/24 in the US, HP order status page still shows my expected arrival date as 02/26 as I paid the extra for overnight shipping. Is there any way to get a phone number within HP that we can call about these orders? I have tried calling the number on the order status page, they redirect me to web sales, who redirects me back to support, who tries sending me elsewhere and then hanging up on me.

I actually went so far as to do the whole contact the CEO thing on the HP site. Someone from the CEO office contacted me back and escalated it to a Case Manager within HP, but the CM said that she couldn't help me and would have someone else contact me that could. That was 3 days ago, and still no more calls. At this point I am about ready to ship my home server to Hp with a large ASCII finger printed on the box and just build my own.

  • Whoop

So has ANYONE is the usa had the disc ship yet ? anyone ?

    • HP Hater

I have been waiting since the 25th of February for this product, and Have spoken with HP Tech support. Who knows nothing of the delay and is kept so far out of the loop they are like the customers. They throw there hands in the air and act like they just dont care.

HP is going to have a big public relations problem on their hands if they dont get their act stratetened up fast.

  • Brian

I am absolutely appalled by the level of service from HP. I have supported them for almost 10 years now, but I have vowed after some recent experiences with their tech support and this huge fiasco on not being able to supply a product with in a timely manner that I will never by another HP product. Good bye HP hello DELL!!!

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/urmaster urmaster

I'm done with HP too, but I doubt I'll shift to Dell ever. You'll find that usually the larger companies have communication problems like this but some HP heads need to roll for the handling of these servers.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/tezzer Terry Walsh

Seriously? Think about what you're saying here – you really think that real people should lose their livelihoods over this? Come on – a bit of perspective, please! It's not great, I know, but I'm sure it's not malicious!

        • Mark G

Malicious, of course not. The problem is that HP management just doesn't give a sH*t. HP is a behemoth, what happnes here with those few of us will never amount to anything. They are just waiting it out and hoping the problem just goes away and eventually it will.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/urmaster urmaster

Terry this is in perfect perspective, It has been going on ever since the EX48x series has been released; previous customers were immediately, discarded. Even with this update our servers are still listed as discontinued products. From the get go these have been mismanaged. They don't even take the time to put information on their own website. I can honestly say this has been a complete shambles.

      • http://s8int.com Red

I agree with both statements. If someone can't handle their job they shouldn't have it.

  • Noah

Last product I will ever buy from HP. They refused to cut me a break on the 1-3 day shipping cost even though it cost more than the discs themselves to ship to Canada and the shipping was actually going to take 3 weeks. This is the direct quote from their manager Beth " we guarentee it will be 1-3 days once it ships". Do they really hire such stupid people or do they just not have anything better to say!!!!!

  • Ryan

There is a law in America against collecting $ for a product prior to manufacturing the product. Has Anyones card been charged? It would be something to look into

    • Mark

      Not yet…

  • Kevin Dyas

My order through UK Best2Serve now shows 'Expect Shipment' however for the individual product line says 'Not yet shipped'. I ordered on the 23rd (the date the upgrade was announced).

    Kev.

  • Kenneth

    Hi,
I ordered on the 23rd and today there is new info on Best2Serve:

    Packet number.: No tracking details.
    Number sent: 1
    Dispatch Date: 05-Mar-2010 :D

  • Kevin Dyas

I've got the same now and for the order status "Shipped – Your order has been send" – sounds a bit Engrish to me! :) BUT – IT IS ON ITS WAY! :D

    • http://www.best2serve.com Best2Serve

Ouch! I usually browse the site in Dutch and place a test order on occasion in Dutch as well. Thank you for this fine example of Engrish indeed. Needless to say, this has been fixed. Now, your order has been sent!

  • Fingers crossed

Looks like mine is on it's way as well…."Shipped – Your order has been send "

  • Tony

I'm here in the UK (Manchester) and just had a look at the Best2Serve this morning (10:00) and it says my order has been shipped.

Anyone know what courier / postal service they use?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/urmaster urmaster

Should be UPS, but it's always hard to extract information from hp or their affiliates.

  • Can u Digg it

Anyone in the US have sent status ?

    • Brian

Nope. I ordered early morning on the 25th and it still hasn't shipped. HP has really dropped the ball on this.

    • UpgradeManiac

My HP Customer Service Order Status says:
      Entry date / time: 02/25/2010 06:42am PT
Scheduled Ship Date: not yet shipped
      Expected Delivery Date: 03/05/2010
      Shipping Method: POSTAL SERVICE (STANDARD)

As it's now 03/06/2010 09:15am CT I don't think I'll be getting it on time unless HP has access to a TARDIS or Time Turner™.

  • jon

Nope. Called them yesterday and got transferred between departments. One person said it was on back order and should ship in 2 days. We'll see.

  • Tim

After getting a 'potential delay' email, I went back and checked on the HP site, and my order, placed last week, is showing a likely delivery date of March 23rd (US delivery)

    • Can u Digg it

Well i ordered mine o … Entry date / time: 02/25/2010 07:08am PT .. and it says i will still get it Match 5th .. but seeing as today is the 6th .. whoa that will be some trick to pull off !

  • http://twitter.com/halsandick @halsandick

The status page for my order says that the software will arrive 3/5/10 (yesterday). It didn't arrive. Two weeks ago when the online website wasn't working, I called HP to find out what was up. I told the employee that they way this update has been handled was been bizarre and will make think twice about buying an hp product again. His response was, "that's your prerogative." I kid you not.

To me this sums HP's attitude about this product. Clearly, the management of this update leaves much to be desired. I guess this is just a niche product that produces so little income that it's not on anyone's radar. What I think HP doesn't realize is that the people who use this are the "enthusiasts" who friends and relatives come to for advice. In my own case, I'm also the technology specialist for a school that uses HP products. We are constantly re-evaluating what equipment to buy I'm certainly not going to forget any of this.

    Hal Sandick

  • Hp is Crazy

I just don't get why it says Expected on the 5th when it is the 8th .. at least update the expected date to sometime in the future , Unless Marty McFly or Bill and ted come there is no way i am getting it on the 5th

  • Screw HP

This is why I will be downloading a copy when it is available. HP Sucks!!!

  • James

That's ok, mine still shows my expected delivery date of 02/26/2010.

Is there any way to cancel this order? Does anyone have any sort of contact information for a department that can actually give a status on it? I'm sick of getting transferred around and nobody being able to tell me anything about anything.

  • Are you Joking ?

Just for fun i decided to call HP to see where my order is :

So i called the number on the order page 800-474-6836
After dealing with Robots i talk to a Offshore call center ..
Right away they tell me to call Sales center 800-892-6608
i talk to more robots until i talk to another offshore helper who looks up my order and then tells me she can not help me so she tells me about the Special Department ! 800-474-6836 !
And i sit on hold for 10 mins ….
Talk to someone in America this time for 2 mins then back on hold ! ..
(I want to hang up but this is for research!)

Ok so now she asks me if i can turn it on and what the OS is ? i am telling her my sever works great i am calling about my order i placed on the morning of the 25th that hasn't shipped and it has a delivery date of the 5th .. she is confused … now i am on hold for another 10 mins .. Zzzzzz…

So now she tells me she cant help me (so what was the point of waiting for 20 mins) and gave me the direct number !! (for the 3rd time in a row i am getting the direct number) and that number is 208-472-3494 and that number is no longer avaible and they send me back to … Drum roll … The first number !!! 800-474-6836

  • http://twitter.com/brcothran @brcothran

After speaking with Steve at customer service, I learned that hp was overhelemed by the number of orders. He sugested that the delay might be a week. I'm going to wait until next Monday, and if there is no change in status, I'll cancel my order and wait until other people actually have the discs in their hands before I reorder.

    • Wordonthestreet

How did you get to Steve ?

      • http://twitter.com/brcothran @brcothran

Call the customer care number and say that you are calling about a media smart server. That should get you to the correct department.

Well the postman has just been and I am now holding 3 new version 3 cd's from best2buy.

Manchester (UK) sent from the Netherlands.

  • Kenneth

    Hi,
I ordered on the 23rd and today I got them today.
    (Oslo, Norway)

  • Woodsy Owl

So no one in the good ole USA will ever get them it seems : )

  • Bjorn S

Got it delivered today, Stockholm/Sweden. Ordered it 27th or so…

  • http://twitter.com/URPREY @URPREY

I called and was advised that it will be a couple weeks more (USA). I was also advised that there was only a 60-90% success rate on the server recovery option. My system drive recently started throwing errors so I need to replace it anyway.

This is starting to really piss me off.

    • http://lifehacker.com stever

I wish I could get them to send it anyway. I don't want a server recovery.

  • autodrivel

Mine arrived today – London UK

On a side note I have to say the phrases "storm-in-a-teacup" and "out of proportion" spring to mind when reading the entries on this thread.
Whilst acknowledging that if a vendor offers a product for sale and it is purchased then it should be delivered in a timely manner. However, this is not a perfect world, HP simply miscalculated initial demand for this update. They are a commercial enterprise, and would be ill-advised to invest large sums of money in updating a product which is, from their perspective, at end-of-life

The tone of angst/vitreol in some postings here would be appropriate for a medical courier who fails to deliver a donor heart in time for a transplant.
Whereas what we are actually talking about here is 3 CDs, to upgrade a load of currently-working systems.
    Have some sense of perspective!

    • http://s8int.com peter

Yes they simply miscalculated the amount of RAM initially needed to do anything they promised with the server. They simple miscalculated how pissed the original MSS owners would be with no upgrades (the only reason we got the upgrade in the first place). Then they simply miscalculated the date which they could deliver the upgrade…3 times. Autodrivel indeed.

  • paul

Anyone with the update might want to think about a torrent .

      Agreed!!

When I was with M$ one of the things they told us in the tech. support was one good experince generally generated a return customer – but one bad customer experince could generate well over a thousand lost customers. It seems that HP has never heard of that before……………

I remember how customers reacted when I had to tell them they needed to contact HP, From the above replies, HP just does not get it………………They suck at support, they did than and it appears that they still do now. And to NOT address the issue but to leave everyone just hanging is still bad customer support. A simple e-mail can go along way. I know it would for me.

If anyone in Canada actually receives their order, could they please post and advise how much extra they got charged when FedEx delivered it? I'm not impressed by the ridiculous charge for Canadian orders in the first place but if I'm going to get ripped off by FedEx's so-called "brokerage" fees too, then I may just have to reconsider whether this is worth getting at all.

I've noticed some pretty nice prices on Acer's WHS offering lately… Anyone have one of those that they'd like to offer an opinion on?

Anyone have a real number to contact where you can actually get the status. I've been all over the world via phone and have talked to no fewer than 6 sales people and 2 mangers, none of who could help me and passed me off to a different sales group. I've ordered in america. This is BS. I know I never have problems getting software through torrents, it never passes me around, It never makes excuses, it never has given me the wrong number. I tried to do the right thing by ordering it and this is how I get rewarded.
here are the numbers Ive been given.
