What’s the Latest on the HP MediaSmart Server Update?

Welcome to the latest in a now regular series of updates from around the world on HP’s MediaSmart Server 3.0 update. Today’s headlines are that users in the US and Canada have started receiving emails from HP stating that delivery of their update CDs would possibly be delayed, whilst on a brighter note, HP’s European service partners sorted out their problems and ordering re-commenced.

Let’s get into the detail….

North America

We started receiving reports late yesterday that readers who had ordered the update were receiving the following email from HP Support:

Dear Customer:

At HP our products are designed, manufactured and serviced, to meet our high standards.
We apologize for the possible delay in delivery of your service; however, we are diligently working on expediting your order.

Service Order Number xxxxxxxxxxxx
Model # 589796-ZH1
Serial # NSN

We are striving to meet our estimated delivery date; in case where this is not met due to various reasons, an HP representative will attempt to contact you to communicate a new date and/or discuss possible alternative support solutions that could better meet your needs.

Please paste the link below into your browser to get shipment status updates and contact information:

Or contact 1-800-HPINVENT, where we are always ready to serve you.

Please do not reply to this email message, it was sent from an address that is not monitored.

Sincerely,
HP Americas Consumer Support
Date: 3/2/2010

WGS contacted HP to understand the reason behind the delay – they responded as follows:

The CD/DVD replicators that HP contracts out to burn discs on demand and are burning as quickly as they possibly can to fulfil orders. The response has been high and we are greatly appreciative of our install base, want to service them as quickly as possible and will get them their discs as quickly as we can.

Understandably, readers in the US are growing increasingly frustrated by the delays, especially as a distribution date had previously been advised on each order. From the statement above, it appears HP’s partners appear to have now received the software and are now replicating CDs, so it may well be that orders start to be sent out very soon.

Europe

Over here in Europe, we reported yesterday that MediaSmart Server owners were still having trouble ordering their update CDs from HP’s service partner, Best2Serve. The company’s Michel Hendriks, who has helpfully been responding to WGS readers directly on the site over the past couple of days, gave us the following explanation:

“First of all, we’re very sorry for the inconvenience caused to all those that were anxiously awaiting this software upgrade. I would like to assure all of the customers that were able to place an order that their order is safe, and that we’ve just begun processing these orders as the software is now available for production and shipment. I would also like to emphasize that there were no technical problems with our website, the problem was an availability issue. Please know that Best2Serve will do what they can to make sure that everyone gets their upgrades as soon as possible.”

Now that the software is available for distribution, we should expect to see orders starting to be fulfilled in the next few days – those of you in Europe who have placed orders can check their status over at Best2Serve’s website. Michel also sent through a full list of links by country for ordering the EX470 update – here you go:

Please note it looks like only the EX470 series update can be ordered in Europe as the EX480 series was not released over here. If you imported an EX480 series into Europe, you’ll need to find a friend in the USA who can order the update for you.

Finally, the guys from Best2Serve wanted to make a gesture to WGS readers for the inconvenience. The price of the upgrade is low so it was difficult for them to offer any discounts, however, they also sell HP calculators and if you’re in need of one, they’ll happily knock 10% off the price if you use the discount code “wegotserved” at the checkout (Valid until March 14th). You can find the range here. Thanks to Michel for keeping us up to speed with progress over the past couple of days.

One final point to nail – a few readers have asked why CDs are needed in the first place, rather than HP allowing users to download the update. This is apparently due to Microsoft licensing restrictions (I asked the same question to HP a few months ago).

So, that’s all from the HP Update newsdesk this evening – feel free to keep the questions coming!

  • PCADDICT

Mine says estimated delivery date 3/1/2010. USA.
American company can't ship to America first. Simply amazing.

      Well put.

Where is the company headquarters? Hmmmm…. Sounds like the consumers need to make some better decisions on who they buy from :(

Some exp. from my EX470 3.0 Upgrade: (EX470, 0,5+1TB HDD, 2GB Mem, DE, Ordered 589822-ZH1-EMEA with descr. "HP EX470 MediaSmart Server GER" via german HP web / via Best2Serve 4thMar, shipment received Mo.8.Mar. Installed 13./14.. The installation was as described by HP / mswhs.com and took ~60min. I used an XP Home SP3 DE client, with 100MB network. After upgrade completion, recognized 3.0 update 2 and WHS PP3 update started. After completion and reboot, i recognized a corrupted Backup DB ! Tried to repair it using restarts, stabilization time, cleanup/reorgDB without success. Finally did a backupDB repair which ended in loss of 9 of my 10 client backups. So i decided to delete the last one as well, did a reorg and used BDBB to import my -luckily previously exported client backups-. ..to be continued …

  • marossi

    …continued …
Only issues: EventID Warning WNAS 22 "VRM temperature is warning, value = 112 degrees C." and Error WNAS 16 "VRM temperature becomes too high, value = 112 degrees C." (already seen before, misleading as far i remember).
In the end, my EX470 is now up and running with good performance (!) on Rel.3.0 with update patch 2 (btw.: i didn't observe the Twonky CPU load issue).
It definately took a long time for HP to provide the upgrade, but it was really worth the small investment. Thank you HP !!!

correction: upgrade description from HP / mediasmartserver.net

  • Rick

HP Sucks when it comes to service for this product. I called with the same information (product should have been delivered over a week ago). When I called, i spoke to someone with a foreign accent and they provided me with a FEDEX tracking number (my tracking number clearly states postal delivery not FEDEX. The tracking number was not valid). After being transfer a total of 5 times (wasting 75 minutes of my life I will never get back  ) and finally speaking with someone in Tech support who told me that HP was overwhelmed with the response for the upgrade but he did not have the details (nice individual) . WHAT>>>> who is in charge of this company and what kind of message does this send to the world. I would fire everyone involved with the delivery of this upgrade . I will NEVER buy another HP product (I currently own 4 pc/servers) based upon the service / experience I have had in the last several months. I think it is time for some heads to roll and some new management to take over this once great product.
Sorry for the negative email…. But like a lot of people out there, I am frustrated with the lack of communication and ownership of the problem

I've purchased the upgrade for my Ex470 directly in France just for 15€ (thanks family :-) ), instead of 75$CAN. I've already received the box, but not yet installed the upgrade.
And in the same time I'm sure that O/S language will be in french not in english.

I'm sad to see that HP Canada :
    1) is unable to provide information about language used by the upgrade nor the DVD
    2) is unable to offer the same price that the rest of the world

More : I wonder me if legally, I'm allowed to distribute the ISO by torrent i.e. ? Is the upgrade something like a new OS or a ServicePack ?

    Bye.

  • johngluebag

Just got a call from HP (an Indian rep). Says my upgrade will ship April 1 (fools day) . I'm in Canada. I downloaded the EX470 torrent last night and am installing it now. Screw HP I will never by a product again.

    • Billy

where did you find the torrent ? mine still says march 5th

      • johngluebag

P Bay, search "ex470 update", sweet. I still have the discs on order.

    • Polaris

Thanks for the P Bay pointer, am in Canada and don't feel $60 or so dollars is a fair price.

And thanks to whomever put it there.

      • Jeff

Did you use the Pbay update ? how did it go ? is it the English version ?

        • johngluebag

Installed the Pbay update with 2 Gig ram, no data loss but HP Photo viewer doesn't work, video streaming doesn't work and server needs to be rebooted constantly due to Server Console not displaying properly. The Iphone app does not work well with it either – needs to be rebooted alot and is slow as hell. Its the english version. I'm hopping it's an issue with the torrent version and my disks (if thy ever arrive) will be better. Thus far I'm underwhelmed.

          • JerryW

I used the torrent and I have had NO problems with anything, other than a little sluggish response from the whole interface.

It's March 18. I'm in the US and on 3/15 I got a note saying my disk order has been delayed. I paid for express shipping when I ordered the disk on 3/10. I called HP today. The rep told me they can't refund my extra shipping fee, but that disks should ship this week or early next.

The extra shipping fee was only a few bucks, but on principle HP really should do a better job of taking care of details like this. Can't remember the last time I've been this angry about something so trivial. Nice job, HP.

As to why this update isn't available as a download, I got a line about how it violates some agreement with Microsoft since the disk includes their software.

  • Mark

I just got an email minutes ago telling me that my order for the EX470 upgrades discs have shipped today — I'm in the US. They still have my estimated delivery day listed as Monday, 3/22…. I'm curious when they'll show up — I just used standard shipping. I'll let you all know.

Anyone else in the US get their orders shipped?

  • JerryW

I am in U.S. Louisiana.. My order has shipped today as well..

  • Wooooot

    Mine still says expected arrival March 5th : ( Booooo : )

  • tony

Good news in the US… just got a shipment confirmation on 3/19. Its in the mail… I had ordered on 2/25.

  • Manesh

I'm in Tampa FL, and mine for EX470 shipped.

  • terry

Im in central texas… just got my confirmation from HP, almost 30 days since the original order… at least HP isnt leaving the early adopters behind…

  • http://twitter.com/siromega @siromega

I got an email yesterday (3/19) as well, it shipped out. We'll see when it gets here…

  • Manesh

Anybody got their US CD's yet? Been a week and still waiiting, anyone know if they were shipped first class or media mail or priority?

  • Nick

Northern Virginia – got my disks yesterday. Will wait to upgrade until I hear more stories though….

  • Mike

Atlanta – ordered my upgrade (ex48x) on 3/14 and received it yesterday via standard shipping. In the process of upgrading now!

  • Craig

I got my cds for my EX470 a week ago last Friday after ordering them at the end of February. I recieved a couple of emails from HP about the delay in shipping, but I wasn't expecting them to show up quickly anyway after reading about all the delays in shipping in the US. I installed the update using the restore option and really didn't have any problems after I realized the PC Restore Disc and the Server Recovery Disc were labeled incorrectly.
