Add-in Update: WHS Mobile 1.5.4.0

Brent Friedman has published another update to his popular WHS Mobile add-in, which allows iPhone and Windows Mobile smartphone owners to monitor and manage their home servers directly from their mobile device.

The Announcement:

The next version of WHS Mobile is here, this brings embedded icons, fixes foreign characters, fixes the alert number in the app icon, and more.

The Change Log:

Fixed: Spaces in user names with streaming. Had left some code out by mistake.
Fixed: Japanese/Chinese characters in files and folders making the folder/file not load properly.
Added: Uploading an image from your iPhone’s storage or camera will not ask for a file name anymore. Instead, the name is auto-generated from the date and time.
Added: Embedded icons for shares, folders, and most file types. Share and folder icons can be overridden with a “folder.jpg” file inside said folder/share.
Fixed: Handling of folders with mp3s if a folder.jpg file was not found as well (would show an error in the Event Log).
Added: Swipe to the right to show a “delete” button in the file tab. Tap to delete or swipe back to the left to hide.
Changed: XML to JSON in an attempt to speed up browsing.
Changed: Application badge (number) not clearing as it should. Made the app clear the badge on start. Was originally supposed to do that when the notification was cleared on the WHS.
Changed: Thumbnails are resized keeping the aspect ratio (again)
Changed: Optimized memory usage and fixed some leaks
Changed: Made some other tweaks as when I changed from XML to JSON.

And some sample pictures of the application in action:

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I second the Android news! Android is coming up fast and I would love to get access to my homeserver through the same app. I had on my old WM device.

I can't seem to get WHS to connect on my iPhone any more. It used to work great several months ago but I havnt used it in awhile.

I launch the iPhone app and see:

    Starting WHS Server…

    then a popup:

    "Uh oh!
Either the WHS Mobile domain is incorrect, or the domain cannot be contacted."

My EX945 Windows Home Server is fully up to date. (all windows updates, and apps up to date)

I tried connecting to both the local IP 192.168.1.102 and myserver.homeserver.com

I tried both 3G and WiFi on my iPhone.

Both result in the same error.

I even tried changing the logon to Administrator instead of my username.

Any other troubleshooting tips? Should I uninstall and reinstall WHS Mobile on both the WHS and iPhone?

If I use the HP MediaSmart iPhone app I'm able to connect just fine, so the domain name is correct. The domain name is also confirmed working in other ways in settings etc.

I decided to try and uninstall/reinstall the WHS Mobile addin. I couldnt uninstall it ! (error) I had to go in via remote desktop to the full server, and do a manual uninstall. I then used Add-in Cleanup utlity to manually delete WHS Mobile from the installed add-in's list. After rebooting I installed WHS Mobile cleanly. Ok so even after a new install, I STILL CANT CONNECT! :-( wtf?

    Suggestions?

Can anyone poke him to see if WHS is abandoned or still being worked on. I like the program but definitely would like to see some progress even a little. An update on his site would be cool to about status or what not.

    I meant WHS Mobile

I just asked him if he will be updating to WHS 2011. Here is the response:

    Jon,

WHS Mobile is no longer under development. Therefore, WHS Mobile will never work with or be ported to Windows Home Server 2011.
