Hands-On: Netgear Stora 1TB Home Media Network Storage

Conclusions

Having used the Netgear Stora for a short time, I’ve been impressed with its honesty – Netgear have positioned the product as an entry level network storage device for the home, and it delivers a focused set of features very well indeed. Sure there’s more powerful, higher capacity devices out there, but the Stora nails a lot of the simple stuff that many users need. Photo buffs in particular will be impressed with a strong set of features to share and enjoy their images both locally and remotely with family and friends – music and video features are less extensive, and there’s certainly room for growth here but what the Stora does, it does well. Remote access to the Stora is remarkably easy to set up, and delivers a great experience that’s simple to use both on the PC browser and via a mobile device.

On the flip side, charging a yearly subscription for some of the sexier product features is a little cheeky, but they do have strong appeal. The hardware looks great but is definitely value-oriented and backup capabilities are limited, but again, the basics are covered – which is all you can expect from a £150 device. For those looking for their first step into the world of network attached storage, the Netgear Stora provides all of the entry-level features you need plus more than a few added value tricks, all delivered in an attractive, easy to use package.

I have a NETGEAR SC101T which is the previous version of the Stora.
I find it's use of the Zetera Z-SAN File System very combersome and means in the event of a disk failure you cannot readily recover any data. I also find with the SC101T that the throughout over the network on a 100Mbps LAN, I am lucky to get 1MB/s sustained.

I hope they resolved the problems with the Stora, but I think that the ReadyNAS Duo would be a much better product.

Hey, great review. I'm new to looking at purchasing a first media storage and I've found this article very helpful. It's good to see more of the features involved than a standard Amazon spec sheet, and also shows the bar at what to be looking for in features and tools, things I've not really thought about until now…

One question/worry I do have with this model though, is are there any secure anchor points?

In the images supplied it looks like there isn't. A major flaw when you're backing up personal photos and family media. Our house only has a certain number of cupboards and attic space you could hide this in, should the unthinkable happen and we're burgled… Monetary replacement value is not the issue, trying to replace memories is!

In which case, do I need to be looking at the next model/price bracket up from intro?

Mind…. re-reviewing the 'cheap' rear panel and ease of hard drive removal… this kinda makes my initial question redundant.
