Synology Expand Small Business NAS Range With the DiskStation DS1010+

Synology have announced the release of the DiskStation DS1010+, a 5 bay network attached storage device that can be further expanded to a total of 10 bays by adding the company’s own DX510 storage enclosure (available in March). The new device packs a 1.67 GHz Intel Atom D510 CPU with networking powered by two Gigabit LAN ports, 4 USB ports and 1 GB DDRII RAM. Unsually for a NAS device, RAM is upgradable with an optional memory module to 2 or 3GB.

Synology claim a running wattage of around 68W – not the greenest device we’ve seen, but reasonable.  Businesses will be interested in the DS1010’s corporate features, including Windows ADS integration, encrypted FTP server, business mail server, web server, corporate surveillance and USB printer sharing capability. Synology’s PHP/MySQL based Web Station offers the ability to host up to 30 websites on the DS1010.

It’s interested to see the bigger NAS manufacturers beefing up their devices compared to day gone by, with multiple GBs of RAM and Intel processors. Who knows, in the future, we could see one of these units shipping with WHS.
