New WHS Add-In: AdminiMe 2010

Newly elected WHS-MVP Nick Asseloos has been busy last year.  Not only did he release a major update to his popular AutoExit program (Yes, Nick, I need to review it!), but he has been busy on a new add-in titled AdminiMe 2010.

And since Nick can say it better than I:

What does it do, who is it for,…

As the Home Server is a headless machine that is running non stop for long periods of times, and mostly hidden away in some closet/basement/small room; people don’t look at its ‘health’ to often.

To avoid this, you can use AdminiMe, it will monitor your server in the background without you having to do anything.

And in case something goes wrong, it will notify you via mail.

Added to this monitoring, it contains a console where you can watch all kinds of parameters in real-time.

Things like CPU, memory, network, disks and all kinds of statistics like uptime, longest uptime, # of starts,…

But it doesn’t stop there, it also has shortcuts to the most relevant tools:

Event Viewer, Task Manager, Performance Monitor, Remote Desktop.

You also have the option to add your own shortcuts to applications!

And next to that, there is a ‘Run-box’ which has the same functionality as the Windows Run Dialog. (use it with caution!) There is also a screen where you can view, which users have open files to the server shares.

All events are kept in a log that can be consulted later on.

So as you can read, a lot of functionality packed into 1 add-in!

And a few screen shots to get an idea of what the program looks like.

am-1 am-2 am-3 am-4 am-5

In the vein of direction that many things WHS is going, AdminiMe will require a paid registration to unlock all the features of the program.  Which in the case of AdminMe:

The unregistered version basically contains 99.99% of all functionalities, except: there is a nag-screen in the console when the add-in is loaded & the emails that get sent in case of problems don’t contain any details. If you want the details, you need to go to the WHS Console itself.

Cost?  From January 21st until February 4th, the registration price will be: $6/€6/£6/600Yen.  After that time, the normal price after that will be $8/€8/£8/800Yen.

Pretty cheap for a lot of functionality!

Hello. I’m from the heartland of U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PC’s since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Its a great little plugin this!

One big issue tho is the email-alerts are affecting even those issues you select to Ignore in the console.
However this does not affect everything, for instance plugins not yet installed are not reported.

My TZO-account has run out of trial-status and starts alerting. I dont use TZO so I ignore this, yet AdminMe keeps sending mail around every 30min alerting me.

The same issue is for a backupwarning (one of my computers), and this is also Ignored by me on the Console.

I have had some mail-contact now with developer, the issues I have might get taken care of later on (perhaps next update?) so I will hang in there and try this out abit more while I´m waiting.

Mailfilter and such things are helping me avoiding the email as of now.
The networking problem isnt anything Ive noticed, however….you might be able to change the network-card being monitored in the registry.
(developer notify me if I´m wrong and your reading this)

LocalMachine software Asoft, check in there and see if you might be able to change the value.

I also had contact with the developer, I will check the registry to see if I can change something.

I just disabled the email function for now.

No luck, change the registry HKLMSoftwareAsoftNetworkcard and did a restart service and I change back to the old adapter. Will look in more depth after this

Come now, the price on this is virtually negligible, especially if you pay in US dollars, and independent developers need support and to my mind recognition for all of the hard work they put in.

Very nice add-in, particularly from the GUI perspective in addition to the basic functionality. The usability is often a minor afterthought in some of these add-ins but this has a good balanced feel to it.

The add-in is not emailing me at all, can anyone post an example of their communication settings page to iamsam1691@gmail.com?

Do I need to install a SMTP server on my WHS or can I use my ISP's? I've tried smtp.gmail.com/port 25 etc with no luck.

Also, can't find any support forum for feedback! Otherwise looks like a great add-in for which I'd pay €6!

Developer emailed me the simple answer, no forum but quick to respond if you email via his website!

Also can confirm that it can send to multiple email addresses, just include a semi-colon between them.

Feels like a well developed add-in; strange as AutoExit seems clunky in comparison GUI-wise!
