Philips Products on Display at CES

Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. is one of the largest electronics companies in the world.  According to an email invite I received:

Philips will be back at CES after a two-year hiatus.

I decided that it would be quite interesting to see what they had to offer for CES and accepted the invite to talk one-on-one with Philips.

I finally got a list of the products that they will be unveiling at CES, of which there is quite a selection.  What follows are couple of the products that caught my eye:

Philips Wireless HDTV Link SWW1800/27

Whether you are designing an office, a restaurant or kitting out an event – how do you overcome the perennial problem of placing a flat screen TV on an awkward wall or recess, without ruining the aesthetics with a mass of cables? Philips Wireless HDTV Link has the solution – designed as a single, stylish unit that connects devices wirelessly, you now have the freedom to realize your design concept without the cables and clutter that come with AV components.

Philips Remotes: SRP4004 & SRU6006

Do you ever wish you could operate all of your audio visual equipment with just one remote? Regardless of brand and range? A universal remote control lets you do that. These ingenious units are compatible with all kinds of devices and can even take on several at once. Universal remote controls simplify your life, de-clutter your coffee table and enhance your home entertainment experience!

Why these particular ones?

  1. I would love to get rid of a few cables
  2. The BLU Energy Light was of interest as Terry might be needing that by the end of the week
  3. I like the idea of actually turning something off
  4. I’m in a hunt for the perfect remote, so I want to see what Philips has to offer.

There are about 15 more items to check out.  On Friday!

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I`d love to see someone test these HDTV link devices alongside wireless networks. The spectrum is already crowded so I`d be rather nervious about using one of these alongside an N or G network you actually rely on.

Are these devices 2.4GHz or 5 GHz or something else?

  • scoob101

Hang on a minute – you can`t transmit power wirelessley, so If you are forced to run power cables to the HDTV, you might as well run an HDMI / Component alongside?

Sounds like a solution looking for a problem.

    @ scoob101 – sorry you can!!
Just google it. Currently there are devices that cando so, but the application is a) limited to relatively low voltages for real-worl applications, and b) currently limited to labs for higher voltages / longer distance application. Baby steps today, what you & want tomorrow!

@Johan – no you can`t!!! This is today, not star trek!

This is about a product being released to market now. Its not a futurists discussion. Right now, you can`t power a TV wirelessley. You have to run a cable! So, whats the point of getting rid of most of your cables – but still being left with a power cord?!

Just to be clear, I know about magnetic induction, but that aint gonna power my TV.

…As for those remotes, you can forget about it. Just get a Logitech. I bought the SRM-7500 because on paper, it's the best all-in-one plus Media Center remote out there, but there are a ton of connectivity issues and Philips hasn't updated the Windows drivers in 2 years. Too bad…
