HP and McAfee Tie Up Data Vault Security

McAfee have announced a global agreement with HP to supply a 90 Day trial of their Total Protection Service on the HP Storageworks X500 Data Vault series. This is expected given the relationship between the two businesses on the HP MediaSmart Server series, and it’s certainly a neatly integrated AV solution for Windows Home Server.

I’d love to see client protection managed from the home (sorry, small business) server included in this pack too, in the say way achieved by Avast. That said, my trial subscription has now expired on my MediaSmart Server and I haven’t been compelled to pay the subscription – have you?

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –(Business Wire)– Jan 04, 2010 McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE) today announced a worldwide agreement with HP to provide pre-installed McAfee® Total Protection Service on HP StorageWorks X500 Data Vault series storage devices. The service, available now through HP as a 90-day trial subscription, helps consumers and small business users remain competitive by protecting their important business data.

“McAfee Total Protection Service is the industry’s first Security-as-a-Service solution offering always-on guard protection without additional investment in on-premise infrastructure,” said Todd Gebhart, executive vice president and general manager of McAfee’s consumer and small business segment. “McAfee’s service is trusted and designed to deliver security that is always on, always ready and always up-to-date.”

Total Protection Service from McAfee leverages the same software as a service (SaaS) technology that McAfee has used to protect consumers and business customers for more than ten years. Total Protection Service provides integrated endpoint, email and Web protection with access to SecurityCenter, an online console managed by McAfee and available over the Internet, providing organizations with more flexibility in management, reporting and design.

“Customers want to share important documents, photos and media files with the assurance that they are protected from viruses and spy ware,” said Lee Johns, director of marketing, StorageWorks, HP. “When our customers access a file on their HP Data Vault device, McAfee Total Protection Service automatically scans and blocks viruses, spy ware, unwanted programs and other potential Internet threats to ensure greater security.”

Just switched from F-Secure as it run out and there was no upgrade path. Using Avast now for the whole house. I like the integration with WHS and the rest of my network. My original plan of Norton 2010 and F-Secure has been lost but with Avast I'm not too bothered anymore.

Not for me, McAfee is a glorious system hog – as are all the other 'On-Access' scanners out there. It bothered me that no one has a free light-weight AV solution for Windows Home Server. So much so that I created an Add-In based around ClamWin, WHSClamAV is available for download at http://whsclamav.sourceforge.net/
