On Thursday, I unveiled the QNAP TS-219P NAS device.  Yesterday, I opened up the Synology DS410j NAS device.  Today, I am presenting the QNAP NMP-1000.

With the NMP-1000, we take a slight detour from a traditional NAS.  This little gem is designed to serve up any and all media stored on your network, or directly on the drive installed on the NMP-1000.

So, without further delay, let’s take a look at the

QNAP NMP-1000 Network Multimedia Player

As can be seen in the following picture, the NMP-1000 does not look your normal looking server, WHS or NAS.

The following picture of one side of the box with a list of the hardware and software specifications, plus the device features.  I know, very fine print.

Once past the front of box cover, the QNAP philosophy for the TS-219P would appear remain virtually identical for the NMP-1000.  One side panel indicating language support for the NMP-1000

and the back of the box, which highlights many of the hardware and software features of the NAMP-1000..

Finally, we get a bit closer to the contents, which are all packaged quite nicely.  No, that is not the TS-219P pictured below!

Finally!  the NMP-1000. With packing cellophane

and sans cellophane.  The only items you will find on the front are a

  • power button
  • “OK” button
  • “Option” button

We will have to wait a bit to find out what those last two buttons are for.

The business end of the NMP-1000.  What’s there?

  • power cord input
  • USB port
  • eSATA port
  • K-Lock security slot
  • cooling fan
  • HDMI port
  • composite video/audio connections
  • S-Video/composite connections
  • video component connection
  • coax audio port
  • optical audio port
  • LAN port
  • (2) additional USB ports

Remember, this is billed as a multimedia player!

The accessories box jam-packed with….   accessories.

And all laid out.  I will get back to you on what is all included later.

nmp-1000-12

And where is the harddrive?  Nicely hidden away on the side.

nmp-1000-13

A simple push in and up opens the cover

nmp-1000-14

a simple pull up on the locking lever (not visible in the following picture)

and the HD caddy slides out to reveal the drive.  I find it hard to believe there are any electronics inside the case based upon the following picture.

And that is that for the QNAP NMP-1000.  In order to make the most of this device, I will be hooking it up to my “wife’s” LCD TV.  Doh!  Hopefully, all goes well in this endeavor.  If I mess something up, I will be in the doghouse for… forever!

The one really cool thing about reviewing this device is that it has forced me to do something about the Internet connectivity issues I have with my HT setup, which at the moment does not exist.  I broke down and purchased a powerline adapter kit.  Which one?  First. let’s see how well it works.  About all I can tell you right now is that I have another item to review at some point.  And one I had to go out and purchase myself, which leads to the question of whether I made a good choice, or not!  We will see…

Hello. I’m from the heartland of U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PC’s since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.
