LaCie makes computer storage devices. External DVD drives, USB flash drives, and several variations of hard drive configurations. One of their products is called the LaCie Network Space, Design by Neil Poulton which is a single drive NAS device with the ability to add an additional drive through a front mounted USB 2.0 host connection. This allows you to connect a USB flash drive, external hard drive or digital camera, and import files automatically without the need of a computer.
Combining great looks with a fanless design makes this a item that would blend in nicely in most entertainment rooms.
The Network Space has just gone through a major product update. The Network Space is now the Network Space 2. Why 2?
According to the good folks at LaCie,
Leveraging the LaCie Network Assistant, the Network Space 2 now includes a customizable dashboard. Users can simply drag and drop the feature icons they would like to add and manage – creating their own management system. The feature widgets allow users to easily setup and adjust settings on the fly – without having to navigate through confusing administration settings.
Major features associated with the Network Space 2 are
- Simplified setup and customizable dashboard
- Centralize, share and back up your files
- Enjoy photos, music and videos on UPnP™/DLNA™ players
- Download torrents even with your computer turned off
Whether one calls those little mini-programs gadgets, apps, or widgets, I think every company is looking to jump on the mini-program bandwagon to help sell their product. If it makes it easier for the customer to use a product, then I am all for it. Key words are “if”, “easier” and “use”.

and a set of widget screens.
As I said before, this is one slick looking unit. The LaCie Network Space 2 is available now in a 1TB version in Europe and will be available elsewhere by years end. With a LaCie online price of £134.99 inc VAT, this little device can provide some serious competition to those entry level WHS machines like the HP LX195’s and 197’s.
