Make Your WHS a Member of “My Computer”

Information on a genuinely interesting little utility was posted in the WGS forums on Tuesday.  Normally, your computer will recognize your WHS as a computer on your network.  If you would like it to show up a drive under “My Computer”, try out this automated version of Jesse Torres’ instructions on how to do just that.

From the author, Eric van den Berg:

As I have a custom made WHS I also wanted to have an icon in My Computer (and the Desktop) for my HomeServer. I started with the manual installation of Jesse Michael Torres and made a whole program around it. With the icon library of Gustavo Franco it becomes possible to select icons inside an .exe, .dll or .icl. It also contains an icon library with a couple of icons of home servers.
There is a version for x86 and x64 systems. I tested it myself on Windows Vista (x86) and Windows 7 (x64).
Downloads (version 1.0.0.7):

Of course there is still a wish list:

  • Multi language support
  • Administrative installation support
  • More icons of home servers in the library
  • Support for multiple instances

How useful this utility is may be debatable, but it sure is cool!

Hello. I’m from the heartland of U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PC’s since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

This was cool when it came out, and now it's got a nice install UI, sweet.

I'd like the see the connector options added to this app. Backup Now, View Backup Status, Shared Folders

. I'll throw in my 470 icon into the icons folder and try that, but this new Win7 server icon is nice.

Just saw that it puts an icon on the desktop that can replace the Shared Folders icon and if you double click it, the Shared Folders open and if you right click it, it give new those added options, double sweet.

As an alternative to this solution one might use the 'Add to library' option on the shared folders on the WHS which is standard functionality of Windows 7. Personally, I'm a big fan of this new Windows 7 feature; it gives me direct access to the WSH shared folders, once added. Of course, actually having Windows 7 would be somewhat of a must-have ;)

Having said that, I think both the article and application are excellent! Well done and thank you for sharing.

I'm just wondering if it will work fine as part of an "OEM" install.
